Most of all, now is not the time for false equivalising, whataboutism and authoritarian strongman fanboying. Putin is not protecting ethnic brethren, this invasion is in no way similar to NATO's 1999 intervention, and this is not marvellous mastermindery, only brazen aggression.

As human beings before all, we should grieve for the people of Ukraine. Those who had firsthand experience of wars in their backyards and around their borders, and whose loved ones were injured or perished know best war is hell. There are no two ways about it.

This comes at the time when the Balkans are facing a new spiral of instability. 🇺🇸 needs to understand accommodating illiberal leaders for fear of pushing them into the competitors’ fold is, in the long run, damaging to democratic rule and the West’s reputation. /5
