Think Celestial!

I recently celebrated my 99th birthday and thus commenced my 100th year of living. I am often asked the secret to living so long. A better question would be, “What have I learned in nearly a century of living?”
I have learned that Heavenly Father’s plan for us is fabulous, that what we do in this life really matters, and that the Savior’s Atonement is what makes our Father’s plan possible.
Here is the great news of God’s plan: The very things that will make your mortal life the best it can be are exactly the same things that will make your life throughout all eternity the best it can be!

Mortality is a master class in learning to choose the things of greatest eternal import. Far too many people live as though this life is all there is. However, your choices today will determine three things: where you will live throughout eternity, the kind of body with which you will be resurrected, and those with whom you will live forever. So, think celestial.

When you make choices, I invite you to take the long view—an eternal view. Put Jesus Christ first, because your eternal life is dependent upon your faith in Him and in His Atonement. It is also dependent upon your obedience to His laws. Obedience paves the way for a joyful life for you today and a grand, eternal reward tomorrow.

When you are confronted with a dilemma, think celestial! When tested by temptation, think celestial! When life or loved ones let you down, think celestial! When someone dies “prematurely,” think celestial. When someone lingers with a devastating illness, think celestial. When the pressures of life crowd in upon you, think celestial! As you recover from an accident or injury, think celestial!

As you think celestial, your heart will gradually change. You will want to pray more often and more sincerely. The Lord’s perspective transcends your mortal wisdom. His response to your prayers may surprise you and will help you to think celestial. #GeneralConference

The love of the Savior is evident in our lives when we sustain one another in His work. To sustain means to “hold up” another person, to give them our attention, to be faithful to their trust, to act upon their words.

Sustaining includes holding up our stake presidents and bishops, quorum and organization leaders, teachers and even camp directors in our wards and stakes—in addition to sustaining our living prophet, the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, General Authorities, and officers of the Church.

In holding up our hands, we are committing our support, not just for that moment but in our daily lives. Closer to home, we hold up our wives and husbands, children, parents, extended family, and neighbors.

When we hold up one another we are essentially saying, “I am here for you, not just to hold up your arms and hands when they ‘hang down’ (Doctrine and Covenants 81:5) but to be a comfort and strength at your side.”

As President Russell M. Nelson, the Lord’s prophet, continues to invite us to become more diligent disciples of Jesus Christ, I feel blessed to hold up his teachings, to hold up his example of Christlike living, and to hold up his fervent testimony of our Lord and Savior, the Redeemer of us all.

May we all, as disciples of Jesus Christ, hold up His light.

The Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ provide spiritual guidance and teaching from Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

The Lord declared they would be joined together and “become one in thine hand” concerning the stick of Judah, which is the Bible, and the stick of Joseph, which is the Book of Mormon (see Ezekiel 37:15–17; see also 2 Nephi 3:12).

@TheBookofMormon provides fundamental doctrine that enhances and builds upon the Bible. For example, where the Bible provides an accurate account of the mortal ministry of Jesus Christ, including His death and Resurrection, the Book of Mormon is more explicit about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, something prophets explained in detail prior to His birth.

We treasure these books for their profound role in documenting God’s direction to ancient prophets and people and the guidance they provide for our own personal lives.
