Daniel spent the dark hours of the morning loading his wagon with the many crates he’d been preparing all week from his harvest. He neatly covered the fruits and vegetables with his specially made tarps. He grabbed the handpainted signs and tossed them in the back. He raised his arms, flicked the straps towards his mule. The mule had no protest.

As the dawn chorus of songbirds began, Daniel noticed a red fox carefully sneaking just outside of the treeline along the road. “Screee!”. A series of wavering shrieks and a brief cry. Daniel turned his head towards the road in front of him, and began to hum a tune. The sun peeked over the tree line and started to warm his face. He smiled.

He found his way to the East ward of town, the normal spot where he would set up his stand before the crowds arrived. Boards stacked on thick logs, held up the heavy crates. “The signs”. While he placed the signs, he stopped his cheerful humming, and noticed the street was still empty, no people, no sounds that would normally fill the morning of the full harvest market. He looked around to take in the view of the street. Then he walked down to the next corner and peeked around to see the same thing, no activity, no one at all. He heard a loud noise, not far behind. He went back to look at his stand from afar, and saw no one - a large shape, dark, moved around the opposite corner. He tilted his head and walked towards it. Crunch. A hollow snap then wet tearing sound - he froze. He turned his head towards the sky, the moon sat red behind the clouds. He turned his feet towards his stand. A deep, sharp growl came out of the alley. He ran. The wet, slapping rhythm of four feet, maybe more, struck the cobblestone behind him as he ran. Squelch, squelch, squelch. Daniel ran. He took the next corner without looking. Then another. His boots found the cobblestone wrong on the turn and he caught himself on a wall and kept moving. An old stand, covered in large tarps appeared after turning a corner somewhere in the center of town. He went to the stand and saw a sign. “Closed for the Reaping Harvest”. Daniel stood still. His hand found the medallion at his chest that was worn on a chain. The sound of slapping feet grew louder. Then, a light padding - scraping the cobblestone with each step. Sniff. He heard the sounds approaching. Then, Daniel turned around. The medallion was in his hand. He began to pray. He no longer heard the footsteps.

Sir Denrich tossed his broken sword to the ground after striking down another footmen when he saw a path to charge the enemy commander. Roderick. He grabbed his mace, spurred his horse. With a guttural yell, he rode hard, hearing the sound of arrows deflecting from his armor, he raised his weapon to strike as he flanked the enemy. Thunk. Sir Denrich’s arm fell backwards when he meant to strike.

Clara shut the door behind her. Set her purse and jacket down on the couch, and looked around her living room. She stared at the family photos on the fireplace mantle, her hand moved to cover her heart, but found itself resting at the base of her throat. Several moments passed, then her eyes drifted towards the family room where no one was sitting, no one watching the television. Empty.

With a guttural yell, he rode hard, hearing the sound of arrows deflecting from his armor, he raised his weapon to strike as he flanked the enemy. Thunk. Echoes of Belief - Chapter 6: Shadows of Hunger (Part 2)

Jeran dodged a shadow’s claw, his fist slamming its misty chest, scattering it in a chill burst. Keep moving, he thought, boots skidding on slick boards, blood seeping from his arm, a faint sting grounding him. The weight in his chest pulsed, the hum’s wail piercing. Shadows surged, claws relentless; one slashed, debris fell, pinning him against a cot. No, not now, he urged, notoriety from saving Lina driving him. He shoved free, barely, a beam creaking above, wind hurling rain through shattered panes. Sensei’s exposed, he thought, lunging forward, shadows closing in, the mission’s scarred walls trembling.

Kess carved through a shadow, her knife flashing, One strike, she thought, its form dissolving. Her gaze snapped to Lina, huddled behind a crate, trembling. The chanter’s voice sharpened, a chant like broken glass, and Lina’s eyes emptied, hands seizing a jagged glass shard from the debris. What the hell is this? Kess thought, confusion surging as Lina lunged, shard slashing, grazing her arm. This can’t be real, no! she thought, blocking, boots slipping on the wet floor, wind stinging her face. Another shadow loomed; Kess slashed, lamplight flickering, her heart racing, Lina’s blank stare a nightmare.

Sensei faced the chanter, his bone-like blade humming, edge glinting with rune-glow. Hit true, he thought, frustration simmering, glass crunching underfoot. The chanter’s cloak swirled, his wail smothering the air, occult symbols flaring. Sensei struck, blade biting the chanter’s side—clean—but the wound sealed, unmarked. Damn it, he thought, lunging again. A shadow swiped; two slashes burst it apart, a swaying beam groaning overhead. The chanter’s hands wove, air shimmering, his gaze piercing.

Lina’s shard slashed, her mind a void, the chanter’s voice a pulse in her skull. Kill, it commanded, Kess’s form a blur, her own will erased. No control, she thought faintly, rain blinding, glass heavy in her hand. Kess parried, shoving her back, She’s not Lina, she thought, confusion spiraling, another shadow forcing her knife to swing. Jeran broke free, fist shattering a shade, the weight stirring, hum’s wail a tide. Shadows swarmed, debris raining, pinning him again—no escape, he thought, barely rolling clear, the mission quaking, hunger alive in the storm’s roar.

Echoes of Belief - Chapter 5: Whispers of Absence (Part 2)
Lina sat straighter on the cot, eyes less clouded, the hum’s drone a faint sting. Jeran stood nearby, thigh aching from old wounds, a strange weight in his chest—something he carried, heavy, unspoken. Lina’s hands steadied, but fear lingered, her mind scarred by the mage’s spell. “He moved fast,” she whispered, voice tight. “Muttered dark words, sharp, like glass. His eyes burned, and my thoughts… twisted, like I had to obey, to feed his ritual.” She shuddered, recalling the mournful chant, a wound in the air. Kess, beside her, gripped her shoulder, green eyes blazing. “You broke it, Lina. Tell us.” Lina nodded. “He spoke of balance, said the gods are fading, the world’s wrong. Wanted me for… something hungry.”  

Sensei beckoned them to the mission’s yard, where boarded churches stood, their doors marked with jagged symbols, not prayers. “World’s shifting,” he growled, tossing Jeran a staff. “Train, or it claims you.” Kess spun hers, braid dancing, her courage a fire Jeran leaned toward. Sensei’s drills pushed them hard—Jeran’s leg slowed his swings, but his will held, a spark against the hum’s pull. Kess met his strikes, her taunts sharp, masking dread of the river’s lights.  

Sensei stopped, drawing a blade from his coat—blackened, bone-like, its edge glinting unnaturally. “Chicago, years ago,” he said, voice rough. “Met cultists chanting to shadows, spilling blood. This cut their leader down, but it hums, wants more.” His gaze hardened, a scar of memory. Jeran felt the weight in his chest stir, Sensei’s trust earned from saving Lina. Kess eyed the blade. “For the mage?” Sensei nodded. “When we face him.”  

Mara, the gray-haired wanderer, stepped forward, pendant gleaming—three circles, no cross. “It’s everywhere,” she said. “Boston’s churches burn, folk carve effigies. Cairo’s streets hum with chants to eyeless things. Even Rome—three years back, the Pope tried to bless a crowd, collapsed, voice gone. They say his god’s weak, like the rest.” Jeran’s jaw tightened, the mage’s “balance” ringing false, a hunger beneath it. A shadow moved in the alley—too tall, skin cracked, eyes like embers, gone in a blink. Not right, he thought, pulse racing.  

Mara’s voice dropped. “Gods don’t answer, so folk turn to potions, rites, things from rifts.” Kess tossed her staff, catching it. “Let ‘em try. We’re tougher.” Her will burned, a shield against the dark. Jeran gripped his staff, leg steady despite the ache, Lina’s words echoing: The world’s wrong. He didn’t know what stirred, but he’d stand against it, with or without gods.

Echoes of Belief - Chapter 6: Shadows of Hunger (Part 1)
A storm tore at St. Ursula’s Haven, rain slashing through cracked windows, wind keening, lamps throwing sharp light across cots and walls carved with faintly glowing occult runes. Jeran stirred, the weight in his chest restless, when a crack like thunder split the night—door timbers bursting, shadows slithering in, their oily forms shimmering, claws catching the light. A cloaked figure stood outside, his chant a mournful wail, curling the air. Fear gripped Jeran, but his will flared, deeds past urging him up. No hesitation, he thought, lunging forward, boots skidding on oil from a fallen lamp. A shadow’s claw raked his arm, blood welling, and he tripped over debris, crashing hard—ribs bruising, wrist twisting painfully. Keep going, he urged, rain blurring his eyes, wind shoving him as he scrambled toward the fray, pain pulsing with each step.

Kess bolted upright, knife drawn, green eyes fierce. “Lina, down!” she called, guiding the girl to a crate where Lina curled, trembling, her sobs swallowed by the storm’s roar. A shadow crept along the wall, then sprang, claw tearing Kess’s sleeve. Strike fast, she thought, slashing, her blade scattering it like mist in one blow. What are they? Panic surged, rain stinging through a broken pane, but she stood firm before Lina, debris snagging her boots, oil-slick boards threatening her stance.

Sensei rose, his bone-like blade humming, its dark edge glinting. His scarred face set, he stepped over a toppled cot, wind tugging his coat. “Your last mistake,” he growled at the chanter, blade raised. A shadow lunged; Parry, strike, he thought, two slashes bursting it apart, glass crunching beneath him. No ordinary foe, his mind noted, the chanter’s wail thickening the air, runes flaring. He pressed forward, a swaying beam groaning above, storm’s fury unyielding.

Lina pressed hands to ears, the hum weaving with the chanter’s voice, fear a knot in her chest. Not again, she thought, catching the cloaked figure’s piercing gaze. Jeran dodged another claw, fist shattering a shadow, its chill lingering. Move, he thought, pain shooting through his ribs, arm bleeding, wrist throbbing. Kess’s knife flashed, shielding Lina, her heart racing: I won’t fail her. The chanter’s chant deepened, shadows closing in, the mission quaking, its scarred walls alive with terror, wind and rain fueling the night’s hunger.
