Cloud and data aren't just back-office modernization projects anymore.
Across government, they're the foundation that makes AI, and faster mission outcomes, possible. Here's what we've been tracking:
🛂 CBP: Cloud modernization is powering AI-enabled screening at the border. Remote baggage screening is expected to save travelers and officers 25–40 minutes per passenger, and an AI coding assistant saved an estimated 11,000 developer hours in 30 days.
🎖️ DOW & VA: A new executive order requires ongoing sharing of service members' personnel and medical records, starting when they enter the military. Today, those transfers can take 90–180 days.
🔬 NIAID: CIO Mike Tartakovsky explains how AI lets researchers analyze genomic, clinical and microbiome data together, surfacing connections no one had thought to look for.
📊 CDC: A new Overdose Prevention Data Channel pulls three separate data systems into one portal, so public health officials spend less time hunting for data and more time acting on it.

AI adoption isn't just a technology problem. It's a leadership problem. Agencies that build a culture of trust and creativity are the ones best positioned to help their teams use AI in meaningful ways.
In this #GovFocus, the 4th Marine Logistics Group's Maj. Christopher Thobaben joins the Library of Congress's Natalie Buda Smith and Knox Systems' Nino Scimemi to discuss how agencies are moving from AI pilots to mission-ready workflows, and why leadership and culture make the difference.

The White House unveiled America .gov, a generative AI site meant to be a single point of entry for citizen services, alongside an executive order giving OMB 90 days to identify which agency services will be integrated. Covered services include public-facing functions serving more than 100,000 users in a 12-month period, and the site says Medicare enrollment, passport applications and federal job applications will be available in 2027.

Ever had to document every dent before driving off in a rental car? Government vehicles work the same way, and it's still done on paper "ding sheets."
CBP's field teams saw a better way: moving the process into an app that draws on the best of eight different local solutions.
In this #GovFocus, CBP's Janet Pence and James McCament join Maximus's Edwin Bodensiek to discuss how human-centered design and grassroots innovation are improving service delivery. They also explore how new mandates like the Government Service Delivery Improvement Act are putting customer experience at the center of modernization.

BREAKING: EPA CIO Carter Farmer is said to take over as federal CIO, filling the government's top IT seat left open since Greg Barbaccia's Aug. 31 departure, an inside source told GovCIO Media & Research.
At EPA, Farmer led the agency through escalating cyber threats to critical infrastructure and has taken major strides in AI adoption across the enterprise.

The War Department is moving quantum technology closer to operational deployment. One example is chip-scale atomic clocks, which the Army and Air Force are each developing as a potential backup navigation tool if adversaries jam GPS.
Army, Air Force, Navy and NIST researchers say what still stands between quantum technology and the field, from standardization to funding: https://t.co/3ipDra9QeF
Runaway costs, security gaps and insufficient oversight are top of mind as agencies work to scale AI from pilots to enterprise-wide impact, and strong infrastructure is imperative for creating a strong foundation for success.
At the Federal Cloud & Data Forum on October 8, NIAID's Joe Croghan, HP's Jeff Malec and GAO's Kevin Walsh will look at what agencies are changing in their AI architecture, how to build controls directly into infrastructure and what to do when an AI system gets it wrong.

As AI becomes more embedded in mission systems, securing the environments behind it is becoming just as critical as deploying the technology itself.
Maj. Michael Donovan, the Marine Corps' Head of Cyber Threat Intelligence and architect of Artemis — an AI-enabled cyber investigation system designed to conduct end-to-end investigations across large-scale enterprise telemetry — joins the AI Summit on November 6 to explain how his team is countering emerging threats, protecting sensitive data and advancing AI without compromising resilience.

Six hours a week. That's how much time VA employees say they're saving with general-purpose AI tools.
And the impact goes beyond productivity: VA's AI efforts are also tied to a 22% decrease in opioid overdose mortality.
Acting Chief AI Officer Kimberly McManus told GovCIO Media & Research how VA is turning years of investment in AI governance, infrastructure and workforce into practical applications across the nation's largest integrated health care system. She also explained how the agency measures AI's impact on quality of care, access to care, turnaround times and employee productivity.

Nearly 2 million people across the War Department now use GenAI .mil, about two-thirds of its 3-million-person workforce.
Acting Deputy CDAO David Jin says the department skipped the "analysis by paralysis" of cataloging every use case and put the capability in people's hands.
DOW partnered with AI labs to offer commands no-cost training and outreach sessions on how the models work and how they apply to contracting, HR and other workflows. Jin said one-on-one instruction matters for a workforce spanning five to six generations.

Army Acting CIO Gabe Chiulli says getting AI to the tactical edge isn't just about the technology. It's about making sure soldiers have the network, infrastructure and access to data they need to use it.
In this #GovFocus, Chiulli joins Army Deputy CIO and CDO David Markowitz and Legion Intelligence CEO Ben Van Roo to break down how the Army is tackling those foundational challenges as it works to bring AI capabilities closer to the mission and make them useful in real-world environments.
