When using automatic mixed-precision training to accelerate model training, there are two common options: float16 and bfloat16 (16-bit "brain" floating points). What's the difference?

Compared to float16, bfloat16 has the same dynamic range as float32 but lower precision.

In my opinion, float16 offers the best balance between precision and memory usage. The advantage of bfloat16 is that it can represent a wide range of values using fewer bits than float32, but the disadvantage is that it has lower precision than float16.

Personally, assuming the inputs and activations of my neural networks are normalized, I barely notice a difference in practice.
