Instead of hiding his daughter with Down syndrome, Charles de Gaulle raised her proudly and she became the heart of his life....

When Charles de Gaulle died in 1970, he made a quiet request that surprised many. He did not want a grand state funeral in Paris. He asked to be buried in the small village of Colombey les Deux Églises, beside his daughter Anne. For him, that resting place mattered more than any monument.

Anne was born on New Year’s Day in 1928, youngest of three children. She had Down syndrome, a condition surrounded by fear and misinformation at the time. Doctors and society often blamed parents and urged families to hide children like her from public view. For families of power and status, sending such children away was considered normal. Charles and his wife Yvonne refused. They raised Anne at home with her brother Philippe and sister Élisabeth. There was no secrecy, no shame, no separation. She was simply their daughter.

To the world, de Gaulle was distant and unyielding. A leader shaped by war, discipline, and command. But inside his home, Anne revealed a side few ever saw. With her, he laughed freely. He sang songs, told stories, and played games. Friends noticed that the man who rarely showed emotion softened completely in her presence. He called her my joy. Anne asked nothing of him except love, and in that simplicity, he found peace. She was never treated as fragile or inferior. She was respected fully, included always, and loved without condition.

That love did not end within the family. After the war, Charles and Yvonne founded the Fondation Anne de Gaulle. They turned a château into a home for young women with intellectual disabilities, many of whom had been abandoned. At a time when support barely existed, they chose action over silence.

Anne’s life was short. She died of pneumonia in 1948, just after turning twenty, in her father’s arms. In his grief, de Gaulle whispered that now she was like the others, finally free from the limits the world had placed on her.

After her death, he carried her photograph everywhere. He believed her presence protected him, even during an assassination attempt years later. Whether faith or fate, he never doubted her importance in his life.

Charles de Gaulle found his deepest calm not in leadership or victory, but in loving a child the world did not understand. His family showed that dignity is not about ability. It is about how fiercely we choose to care.

Geachte mevrouw Halsema,

Met verbijstering heb ik als Joodse Amsterdammer uw statement m.b.t. de Nakba gelezen. Verbijstering omdat het u kennelijk aan kennis van het Israëlisch- Palestijns conflict ontbreekt. Over dat conflict zijn boekenkasten vol geschreven.
In 1947 nam de Algemene Vergadering van de VN het zgn. verdelingsplan van Palestina aan. Het land zou conform de resolutie van de VN in twee onafhankelijke staten worden opgedeeld.. Een Joodse en een Palestijnse/Arabische. De Joden ( zionisten ) aanvaardden dat zgn. verdelingsplan en stichtten op 14 mei 1948 de staat Israël.
De Palestijnen deden dat niet en kozen de kant van de Arabische buurlanden die hadden aangekondigd de staat Israël en zijn bevolking (750.000 zielen) in zee te zullen drijven. Op die 14e mei 1948 verklaarden de Arabische buurlanden de oorlog aan de nieuwe Joodse staat. Die oorlog leidde tot een vluchtelingenstroom zoals elke oorlog tot vluchtelingen in de geschiedenis leidde.
In die oorlog werden ook Palestijnen van hun geboortegrond verdreven. Ruim 250.000 Palestijnen bleven in Palestina en werden staatsburgers van de nieuwe staat Israël.
Parallel aan het ontstaan van een Palestijns vluchtelingenprobleem ontstond er ook een Joods vluchtelingenprobleem.
Enkele honderdduizenden Joden werden verdreven uit de Arabische buurlanden met achterlating van al hun bezittingen.
Die oorlog gestart in 1948 duurt in feite voort tot op de dag van vandaag.
Vernietiging van Israël en zijn bevolking is nog steeds de wens en het streven van Hamas dat pretendeert de Palestijnse bevolking te representeren.
Inmiddels is het conflict door Amsterdam geïmporteerd hetgeen heeft geleid tot uw statement over de Nakba. Dat statement getuigt uwerzijds niet van een grote kennis van zaken. Door onverbloemd het Palestijns en uiterst linkse narratief te dupliceren draagt u bij tot het verhogen van de spanning tussen de Joodse en moslimgemeenschap in uw en onze stad. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat onder de Joodse bevolking uw eenzijdige en historisch onjuiste beweringen het gevoel van onveiligheid heeft vergroot.
Dat valt u als burgemeester van alle Amsterdammers kwalijk te nemen.
Als geen ander in onze stad zou u tot verbinding hebben kunnen en moeten bijdragen.

Omdat ik u niet persoonlijk ken dien ik a priori uit te gaan van uw integriteit en daarom nodig ik u uit voor een openbaat debat.
Dit op voorwaarde dat u de veiligheid rond een dergelijk evenement kunt garanderen en een eventueel debat door een professional zal worden gemodereerd.

A while ago, I watched the infamous 47-minute video documenting the atrocities of October 7th — the one not made publicly available, to protect the privacy of the victims.

The worst part of this video is not what it displays, but who is displaying it: the perpetrators themselves. Gleefully. Sadistically. Unabashedly. Most of the footage was filmed by Hamas terrorists on their GoPro bodycams, some also by ordinary Gazan civilians on their cellphones.

Even the Nazis tried to cover up their atrocities, but Hamas brags about theirs for the entire world to see. The killers are euphoric throughout the massacre, and their relentless, ecstatic cries of "Allahu Akbar" (punctuated by the occasional "Kill the Jew!") are simply nauseating.

Some images are seared into my memory forever. I will never forget the two boys in their underwear — one with his eye socket hanging out of his face — asking his brother whether he thinks they're going to die, while the Hamas monster who had just thrown a grenade in their saferoom helps himself to a drink from their fridge, taking a casual break from the slaughter.

Or the throngs of Gazans crowding around pickup trucks loaded with the mutilated corpses of Jewish women, filming and spitting on the bodies. Or the woman in Kibbutz Mefalsim, crouching and begging in vain for mercy.

There is some evidence of sexual violence in the video — the charred corpse of a young woman with her legs splayed and her genitals exposed — but not much. Apparently even Hamas draws a line somewhere: they are not as proud of raping Jewish women as they are of murdering them. Or, more likely, they simply didn't want to embarrass the delicate sensibilities of their legions of useful idiots in the West.

But yes — there was rape. Not "rape" in scare quotes, as the apologists would have it, but sadistic, murderous sexual violence, documented in a new damning new report by The Civil Commission, an independent Israeli women's rights NGO. (video summary here: https://t.co/LTTjiO1s7E)

Across its 180 pages, the report describes "a recurring pattern of rape and gang rape; sexual torture; mutilation; targeted shooting to the face, head and genital area; forced nudity; binding and restraint; genital burning; objects inserted into intimate areas; post-mortem sexual humiliation; and execution during or after sexual assault."

And it was premeditated and organized. The terrorists crossing into Israel carried printed Arabic-to-Hebrew phrasebooks with handy expressions like "take off your pants," "lie down," "spread your legs," and "don't make trouble." I wonder why they expected to need those particular phrases?

I know one thing: no civilized country on earth would tolerate the existence of an organization like Hamas on its border after October 7th. Not one. This includes every self-righteous Westerner currently lecturing Israel from thousands of kilometres away, without an inch of skin in the game.
