“Aoife and Lisa [O’Rourke] came home with two silver medals and there was - I’m not messing - a handful of people at the airport. That really actually bugs me”

There was a full house at today’s IABA “Fueling Success” nutrition conference.
The event, hosted by IABA’s Women in Sport Lead Sophie Doolan and MC’d by Paris Olympian @GrainneWalshBox included a panel discussion with Paris Olympians Jennifer Lehane and Daina Moorehouse.
They discussed their weight-making journeys from their earliest bouts and how these have changed as each boxer has progressed through her career, how they approach fuelling for training and fuelling for fighting; recovery foods, weight maintenance and taking time off from that. They also discussed how weight fluctuates at different stages of the menstrual cycle, and how they approach this – and how can parents/coaches best support younger athletes.
The panel was followed by a keynote presentation by @madigan_sharon Sharon has worked with Boxing High Performance for 20 years – she is the Head of Performance Nutrition at the Institute of Sport, and was Team Ireland’s Head of Sport Science at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Sharon’s presentation included the effects of under-fuelling on performance and overall health on male and female athletes, the importance of carbohydrates to support training and competing, the impact of the menstrual cycle on female athlete nutrition, and also key nutrition markers for athletes aged 6-11, 11-14, 15-18 and 19 to 21, in line with physical development and maturity.
Boxers, coaches and parents were welcome at today’s event. Clubs including Dealgan (Louth), Arbour Hill (Dublin), St. Monica’s (Newry), CBS (Wexford), Dublin City University Athletic Boxing Club, Four Kings (Wicklow), Lucan (Dublin), Santry (Dublin), Smithfield (Dublin), Monivea (Galway), Cherry Orchard (Dublin) and Crumlin (Dublin) attended today’s conference.

The Team Behind The Team ☘️
We spoke to Sport Ireland Institute’s Nicola Farrell - Performance Chef, on her role in the Paris Games and what she is looking most forward to 💪🏼
Nutrition is such a key factor for athlete success, and Sport Ireland Institute, the official performance support partner to @TeamIreland, will be on the ground in Paris behind the Team all the way 💪🏼
Our largest @TeamIreland Boxing team since Rome 1960 🥊
#TeamIreland is the only NOC in Europe to have qualified a full team of women, an incredible achievement given #Paris2024 is only the 4th Olympic cycle in which women may box.
We're SO proud of this remarkable team.💚
Boxer @GrainneWalshBox (@IABABOXING) discusses her appreciation for her #Olympic Qualification at this stage of her career after bouncing back from injuries to claim her place at the Paris Games next month.
The Offaly native lined out for @RoversWomen in the @LOIWomen as a teenager between 2011 and 2013.

These incredible images of a red letter day in Irish boxing were captured by non other than Joe Walsh, brother of newly #Paris2024 qualified @GrainneWalshBox 🥊📸
@GrainneWalshBox said yesterday, “I believe that everything happens for a reason”. The seduction of ‘easy’ can be inebriating, whilst to embrace ‘hard’ creates uncertainty but more potential for growth. Big pride in the @IABABOXING HPU. Dare to dream 🇮🇪💚🥊🏹
