A fire tore through a Winton family's property, burning 3 of 17 acres and destroying the home of 85-year-old Charlie Gorden, who's lived on the land since 1961. It started across from Winfield Elementary, forcing the school to close for cleaning.

Roughly 9,000 tons of tire material are burning near Ballico, with smoke pushing into surrounding farms and prompting health alerts across Merced County. The owner says it's nearly his entire inventory, and crews expect it to burn for days.
