The Mourning Friend Who Found the Body Now Faces Murder Charges
On 23 March 2026, Riaan Scheepers (52) was allegedly murdered while looking after a house in Swartruggens. He suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso and a head injury.
On 25 March, Hendrik Pretorius reported finding Scheepers' body lying near a flower bed at the property and told media he had last seen him alive on 23 March.
In the weeks that followed, police traced leads involving goods allegedly stolen from Scheepers' home that were advertised on local WhatsApp groups. A search warrant later led to the seizure of Pretorius' cellphone, where investigators reportedly found messages discussing the alleged murder weapon.
On 9 June 2026, Pretorius (59) and Benjamin Roos (42) were arrested and charged with murder and house robbery. They appeared in the Swartruggens Magistrate's Court on 11 June 2026 and were expected to apply for bail on 17 June 2026.
Has the @SAHRCommission said anything about the death of Gcina Dhladhla, who was reportedly forced to report for duty at @CartrackZA despite being unwell?
Or are the human rights of Ms Dhladhla and other South African workers somehow less deserving of protection and scrutiny?
