@BenGrahamUK@piersmorgan@DCBMEP Whoever the Labour Party chooses as its leader is for the MPs & Membership of the party as it is with all democratic parties. The leader who commands the most seats is PM. We dont elect a PM we elect MPs who stand for a party & its policies. Its not American Presidential politics.
@piersmorgan That's not how parliament works, a PM is someone who only needs to command a majority in parliament. We dont vote for leaders we vote for party policies. Going down the American road is hardly something any county should aspire too, let alone the mother of parliaments.
@owenjonesjourno@AndyBurnhamGM isn't going to fall for this trap he's already talking about changes that will make a massive difference to the daily lives of people in Makerfield, like nationaliaing the very utilities they use & investing in industry.Polices progresisve countries do all the time.
I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election.
I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics.
Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic.
Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures.
However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people.
Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place.
I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that.
Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again.

I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government https://t.co/PNfl5GnB0X
@johnmcdonnellMP
Can the left of the party unite behind a candiate in the next 48 hours. Its vital that a right wing move of party, by less than 100 MPs is resisted. Ed Miliband is surely the best candidate under such circumstances to unite the party with others unable to stand.
@PippaCrerar@breeallegretti@patrickkmaguire The left of the party needs to unite behind a candiate and quickly. Ed Miliband with Rayner and Burnhams backing can be a unity candidate. Bringing both back into Govt.
@PippaCrerar It be would highly unlikely that this is uncoordinated. Streeting can try and get out the traps first but ultimately someone from the left will stand and he will lose badly to whoever it is. In polls he has been shown not to be popular with the membership.
@owenjonesjourno Its quite shocking what appears to be an organised plan to remove Starmer is taking place by the right of the party. The membership will not back a candidate who appears to have committed treachery.
@PippaCrerar@SkyNews Is there a panic that if Burnham gets into parliament it then becomes a coronation? Either way it seems highly implausible that Streeting coming from the right of the party will get enough support from the unions or members to win if a credible left wing alternative were to stand
@piersmorgan If Starmer sets out that he will stand down in the next six months allowing Andy Burnham to stand, Labour can then hold a proper leadership contest to succeed him. It will allow all parts of the party to put up candidates with a vision to take the party into the next election.
Piers Morgan, "If we discovered last week that Keir Starmer has taken £5,000,000 without declaring it from a crypto billionaire in Thailand, Reform UK would have gone absolutely berserk" @piersmorgan 👏
Robert Jenrick, "We're talking about a gift even before Nigel Farage was a member of parliament"
Fiona Bruce, "But you know you have to declare it in the 12 months before you become an MP"
@piersmorgan Bruno has had to contend with playing half the season in an unnatural position and yet look as his Stats. Would Rice have achieved what he had under such circumstances? I doubt it, hence why the football writers who do this for a living without favor have chosen him. Simples.
@mattvanswol They will lose the midterms no ifs, no buts & maybes. The GOP has done literally nothing to help working class people in the last 18 months. A tax break for the rich, whilst not pushing back on Trumps reckless war in Iran thats causing havoc is not a winning platform to run on.
@mattvanswol@ewarren When the wealthy paid higher taxes after WW2 and until the late 70s the middle class in America BOOMED, Govt had money to invest in education and infrastructure and the wealthy were STILL wealthy. Just not obscenely & indefensibly so, this as poverty and ill health runs rampant.
