Copper Is Sending a Very Different Message Than Oil
Why Copper Crashed
Copper’s drop today needs to be separated into the immediate trigger and the macro backdrop.
The immediate trigger was Washington. Traders had built a tariff premium into copper because they expected the White House to extend duties to refined copper. That helped pull metal into the U.S. and push prices higher.
When reports surfaced that the decision had stalled over affordability concerns, that premium unwound violently. Copper fell more than 4%.
Washington pulled the trigger. The macro environment determines what happens next.
The $100 Oil Problem
Brent is above $100 while the dollar is strengthening and financial conditions are tightening.
Higher oil creates two opposing forces.
• Mining and transportation become more expensive
• Industrial demand weakens as energy costs squeeze consumers and businesses
Eventually the second can dominate.
Higher production costs cannot guarantee higher copper prices if factories stop buying.
Energy inflation raises freight and manufacturing costs, compresses margins and reduces household purchasing power. It also keeps central banks cautious, real rates higher and the dollar stronger.
That pressures construction, manufacturing and autos.
Oil can rise because supply has disappeared while copper falls because markets fear demand disappears next.
Gold and Silver Add Another Signal
Copper was not alone. Gold and silver also sold off sharply after the 5.4% PPI reading while Treasury yields and the dollar moved higher.
Gold can fall when hotter inflation pushes real yields higher. Silver also carries industrial exposure, making it vulnerable when higher rates collide with weaker growth.
Copper, gold and silver falling together while oil surges does not look like a broad commodity boom. It looks more like an energy shock tightening financial conditions.
History Shows Two Oil Regimes
When oil rises because global growth is booming, copper often rises with it. That happened during the 2007 to 2008 commodity boom.
Supply shocks behave differently. In 2022 Brent surged above $100 and copper initially hit record highs. But as tightening intensified, China weakened and recession fears grew, copper later lost roughly a third of its value.
Demand driven $100 oil can coexist with rising copper. Supply driven $100 oil in restrictive financial conditions is far more dangerous.
What Matters Next
Copper still has a powerful long term story from grids, electrification, defense spending and AI. That does not prevent a severe cyclical decline.
Today’s copper crash alone does not prove recession. The tariff reversal accelerated it.
But if Brent stays above $100 while copper keeps weakening, precious metals stay pressured, the dollar strengthens and global cyclicals roll over, the message becomes harder to dismiss.
Oil and copper rising together usually signal strong nominal global activity.
Oil rising while copper falls can signal scarcity in energy colliding with weakening demand elsewhere.
Today we are beginning to see the latter.
