A goldfinch is sitting on its feeder, tethered by its foot. Goldfinches were popular pets, as they could be taught tricks like drawing water from a bowl with a miniature bucket. This is one of the few works by Carel Fabritius and was painted in 1654.
What makes Albrecht Dürer's 'The Large Piece of Turf,' (1503) extraordinary is we can identify species such as plantain, dandelion, meadow grasses, yarrow, and speedwell. Rather than idealising nature, Dürer observed it with remarkable precision.
