Parents for the love of god please stay out of your son or daughters dugout. Players, stop going to visit mommy and daddy during the game. You might as well go out on the field with an emotional support stuffed animal at this point it’s getting a little nuts. Get their water or whatever they need before the game you don’t need to visit each other 5 times a game and then wonder why they can’t do hard things on their own.
Call me old school, but I’d trade a lot of today’s tournament baseball culture for a little more focus on the game itself.
Less GameChanger obsession.
Less walk-up song production.
Less nonstop dugout chatter.
More competing. More learning. More baseball.
The biggest mistake I made as a hitter...
I used to take the first pitch fastball.
I told myself I needed to get my timing.
"See one first."
"Time the pitcher."
"Get comfortable."
At the time, it sounded like a smart strategy.
The problem?
It wasn't strategy.
It was fear.
Fear of swinging and missing.
Fear of making an out.
Fear of looking stupid on the first pitch.
But I disguised it as "getting my timing."
What changed everything was a hitting journal.
Throughout pro ball, I tracked everything.
Every pitch I saw.
Every pitch I swung at.
The count.
Pitch location.
What I was thinking.
What I was feeling.
After a full season, I sat down and started digging through the numbers.
One stat jumped off the page.
On 0-0 fastballs...
I was hitting .367.
Not only that, a huge percentage of my doubles, triples, and home runs came on that pitch.
I couldn't believe it.
The pitch I was letting go by was one of the best pitches I'd see all at-bat.
It completely changed my perspective.
That's when I learned a lesson I'll never forget:
Don't confuse fear with strategy.
A lot of hitters do it.
They pass on good pitches because they're "getting their timing."
They become passive because they're "being disciplined."
They play careful because they're "trying not to do too much."
Sometimes that's true.
Sometimes it's fear wearing a different uniform.
My journal exposed it immediately.
From that day forward, I stopped trying to get comfortable.
I started preparing to hit from pitch one.
If you're someone that is unsure of swinging at the first pitch...
Here's my "first pitch crusher plan" I'd Do Tonight to help you:
1. Front Toss (10 Swings)
Treat every pitch like it's 0-0. Be ready to attack your pitch immediately.
2. Short Box (10 Swings)
Every pitch starts 0-0. Compete from the first pitch instead of easing into the round.
3. Batting Practice (10 Swings)
Look for a first-pitch fastball you can drive. Train yourself to be ready from pitch one.
One thing I've learned from baseball:
The best hitters don't wait to get comfortable.
They prepare themselves to compete from the very first pitch.

If you’re graduating high school and heading off to play college baseball - you better show up in the best shape of your life, and you better not be rusty.
You’ll be playing scrimmage games within a couple weeks of getting to campus. College coaches don’t care, just play better.
Too many kids are taking the summer before showing up to college off. In many cases, you’re setting yourself up for failure. You signed up to be a college athlete - you don’t get to do what normal students do anymore.
I don’t understand the sliding mitt for anyone below pro ball. I played through college and was a middle infielder who stole bases. Never once hurt my hand/fingers sliding into a base. Why do 10/11 year olds need them?
USA Prime Boys of Summer Vincent 14U put together a complete performance tonight in an 8-1 win over Akron A’s 14U. The bats were loud and the pitching staff was locked in from start to finish

Dear 11 and 12 year olds and their parents:
The full size field is a year or two away. Those 200-250’ “dingers” you’re hitting now will be fly ball outs soon. I know we love those USSSA bats but you’re also a few years away from using BBCOR bats which will take away your “pop” overnight.
The big field is a game changer. Some will make the transition seem easy but for many it has a way of humbling those kids who dominated the small field. Keep working hard. Be careful of thinking the game is easy. Each year from here on out will push you to get better. Will reveal your toughness. Will challenge you everyday.
BTW, that 90’ sprint to first base will make you feel slow!! 🤣🤣 do your sprints!!
