Are you a Board member of a company that's committed to employee safety? How is that commitment demonstrated? Is safety first on the Board meeting agenda or is it always preceded by a discussion of financials, markets, and customers? Is it even on the agenda? More often than not, if I see it at all, it's buried in the Appendix...one of the last pages of the entire report.
I get it. You're not in the "safety business" so to speak. You're in business to make and sell products, information, services, and to achieve financial goals and targets while doing it. Yet if your company carries out its mission with employees and contractors, you have an obligation to keep them safe - mostly by law, but more importantly, because it's the right thing to do.
Achieving excellence in safety - truly minimizing and/or eliminating employee injuries and hazards better than most in your industry - isn't easy. Like most corporate initiatives and goals, without senior management commitment including Boards of Directors, you'll fall short.
What does senior management commitment look like? I could provide quite the laundry list, but let's keep it simple for now.
- Start with a discussion at the Board meeting. Begin each meeting with a safety moment - a learning, an observation, an example of safety excellence.
- Put safety on the agenda officially - if it isn't. You can't achieve safety excellence if it never gets discussed. What senior management pays attention to gets done.
- If safety is one of the last things you discuss (and sometimes never get to because the Board meeting always runs behind), move it up on the agenda. Its importance is demonstrated by its position on the agenda and time allocation.
Oh, and don't look to the Chief Safety Officer (CSO) to lead the discussion. Don't get me wrong - they play a critical role - but it's a support role. Line management owns safety. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) needs to understand safety, embrace it, and implement it - continuously. The COO leads safety while the CSO supports safety. That means the CSO provides the safety knowledge and expertise the COO needs to execute it in their organization with each and every employee and contractor. It's a partnership.
Need some help in getting started, taking safety to the next level, or a safety culture transformation? I spent most of my career doing it - from the operator's seat. Don't hesitate to reach out.

They said it was routine surgery...yeah, well...not so much. That's a story for another day, as I'm back after a few months of recovery to finish my series on public speaking.
Tip #9 of my Top Ten Public Speaking Tips
Call to Action (CTA)
Asking for, recommending, and/or challenging your audience with a "call to action" can be the most significant gap in your presentation or speech - if omitted. The Call to Action completes the purpose of your speech. You just spent 40 minutes educating, informing, inspiring and entertaining your audience on a particular topic. Isn't there a reason you did so? Don't you want your audience to take some sort of action? To support your cause or company initiative? To develop their skills and expertise?
Pro Tip: Give your audience your best advice!
Keep it simple. Don't provide a laundry list of items. They won't do them. It's too much to remember and it feels heavy. If you could have your audience remember and take one very specific action to help them improve professionally, personally, or help your cause, what would it be? That's what your call to action needs to be. The chances of your audience acting on one recommendation or piece of advice is much greater than them acting on three, or five, or more!
Your CTA is the second to last item in your speech, right before your "memorable close", which I'll share next week. Your close will be an emotional story, to solidify and validate everything you shared during your speech, so the last piece of content prior to that is your CTA. How about...

It doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to be a start - specific, and with a sense of urgency. A simple piece of advice that your audience can act on to start their improvement journey...now!
Your job as a speaker is to inspire your audience to act and start changing the world...or their world, and the Call to Action is your best advice to do so.
Be bold. Go hard. Make it happen!

@DarrigoMelanie How many jobs do you think Elon has created through his companies? Is he a net positive for society or net detractor? Ever seen a poor person give someone a job? Since when is it his job to take care of the homeless when it’s been failed politicians that created the problem?
@_iamlougotti True dat. Nothing comes close. I can’t understand the infatuation with Breaking Bad. TV went downhill ever since the Sopranos went off the air.
@RepLuna@TomFitton Really wondering why law enforcement tolerates this disgusting behavior and assault in this case. Put them in the DC jail for the summer and maybe they’ll “get their minds right.”
@maddenifico 60 Minutes has been the most pompous, arrogant, deceitful organization for the last couple of decades. Pelley and Stahl epitomize delusional, egomaniacal hubris, and I don’t even like Barry Weiss in the least.
@NFL_DovKleiman Please cancel your season tickets Dems. There are plenty of conservatives waiting for season tickets. We could ensure a much larger population of conservative Giants fans.
@FrankPallone@DHSgov Another longtime corrupt NJ Dem that contributed and still is, to the destruction of the great State of NJ. What a bunch of political blowhards you and your colleagues all are.
@kenmartin73 Amazing that you Dems openly route for and fund illegal aliens healthcare, food, rent, etc., at American taxpayer expense. You’re worse than them. You’re openly demonic and treasonous.
