Voting to cover up crimes of their own members simply enables more of this behavior. Illinois is becoming a business killer, and Chicago is becoming a small-business killer.

DraftKings announced it will close its Wrigley Field sportsbook on May 31. In a statement published by the Chicago Tribune, the company pointed directly to Illinois’ tax policies as a major reason for the decision.

“While we are proud of what we have built alongside the Chicago Cubs, we are taking a more focused approach to where we invest in the state. The cost of operating in Illinois, including its high tax structure, makes it more difficult to justify continued investment in a standalone retail sportsbook.”

The “high tax structure” DraftKings referenced includes Illinois’ per-wager tax that took effect on July 1, 2025:

• 25 cents on each of the first 20 million online sports bets annually
• 50 cents on every online sports bet after 20 million wagers

When businesses openly cite taxes and operating costs as reasons for leaving or scaling back investments, Illinois leaders should pay attention.

Every time a company closes a location, reduces investment, or chooses another state, it impacts jobs, economic activity, and future opportunities.

The question Illinois taxpayers should be asking is simple:

How many businesses can Illinois afford to lose before elected officials realize that overtaxing employers comes with consequences?

There are so many stocks that have shown multiple hundreds of percent increases over the past six months thst I can’t even list them all. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.
