🦔McDonald's announced a new AI drive-thru ordering system called Archy IQ at its Worldwide convention this week, built with Google. The system has processed over a million test transactions at five stores, with 90% completed without a human stepping in.
Google Edge Cloud hardware is already going into every US McDonald's location ahead of the broader rollout. McDonald's previously partnered with IBM on AI ordering before moving on in 2024.

My Take
McDonald's serves millions of people a day in the US. A 10% failure rate at that scale is hundreds of thousands of wrong orders, every day. McDonald's left that number out of the announcement.

They tried this with IBM and killed it. Now they're back with Google, and every US location already has the hardware before the pilot at five stores is even done. That's a company-wide infrastructure bet on a system that still fails one in ten times. Nobody at the convention said whether the AI costs less than the person it replaces. Based on what companies found out last week about what AI actually costs, I wouldn't assume it does. The one thing McDonald's definitely did not announce was lower prices for customers. The savings, if they exist, go up. They always do.

The top companion apps have tens of millions of users and let children design an AI "girlfriend" in under five minutes, then charge for virtual gifts and explicit content. The apps advertise on YouTube and online games. There is no minimum age law for AI companions. Age verification is a checkbox.

My Take
I've seen this business model before in credit cards, BNPL, and token billing. Find a vulnerability and build a product around it. These apps found the most vulnerable market available and built the easiest money grab I've come across. A 13-year-old spends £5 here and £10 there on virtual gifts for an AI character he thinks understands him, and his mother finds out when the charges hit her phone bill.

Fifty million downloads, and a big chunk of the customer base can't legally consent to the product. The apps look like games from the outside, which is by design, because no regulatory framework covers standalone AI companions and Ofcom can't touch them. There's no minimum age and the only age check is a box the user clicks. The companies built it that way because lonely teenagers with phones are the most reliable revenue source they've found.

🚨 BREAKING: LEGAL UPDATE
Yesterday, I filed an emergency motion with the Court after armed sheriff's deputies appeared at the homes of three Recorder's Office employees and informed them they were under criminal investigation.

This began after Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell acted on false allegations made by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and the Elections Department against my employees.

What was their alleged offense?

Attempting to use equipment County records show was purchased entirely with Recorder's Office funds and is owned exclusively by the Recorder's Office.

The same equipment the Court has already found was unlawfully taken from the Recorder's Office.

This is the most extreme escalation in a long campaign of retaliatory actions taken by the Board against my staff. 

Over the last year, the Board has repeatedly targeted Recorder's Office employees with false accusations, personal attacks, and retaliatory actions for doing their jobs. Multiple members of my senior staff have required outside counsel to defend against malicious actions taken against them by the Board. My employees have been threatened, doxed, and publicly accused of misconduct for simply carrying out their official duties under Arizona law. 

This is not cooperation. This is retaliation.
