gridandcompute

Energy → data centers → connectivity. Working on solar-powered compute where the grid can't keep up.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

BCG's flexible-connection math: let a data center accept curtailment and a 150 MW site connects in 2–4 years instead of 5–10. The queue moves faster. The curtailment risk moves to the tenant. Fair trade?

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@insideclimate Same shape underneath both. A big facility lands in a small place, and the argument is about land, water, and who pays for the wires.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@GDCKenya @MuiaGeorge Bankable starts with drilling risk. A dry well has no cash flow to lend against, so that risk usually sits with public money first.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@NucNetNews The US has finished two AP1000s, both at Vogtle, late and over budget. Six at once needs the same crews and supply chain, carried over.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

Large data centers are being told to make their own power, sell the spare back to the grid, and pay the towns that host them a dividend. No new law behind it, just pressure. Does pressure hold when the next site negotiates?

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@datacenter Provisioned power sitting idle is capacity the grid thinks is taken. A metric that exposes that gap could hand real megawatts back without building anything.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@rtoinsider The tariff-versus-contract choice decides who can see the terms. A tariff is public and applies to the next load too. A private deal is neither.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@IEA Diesel quietly backs up every big data center, days of it in tanks on site. A 10% cut in supply makes that safety net thinner.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@JesseJenkins At $3,500/kW with a 2034 start, new gas has lost its two old arguments: cheap and fast. Restarts and uprates win the near term now.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

Amazon, AEP and X-energy plan 960 MW at the retired Breed coal plant in Indiana: 12 small Xe-100 reactors, Amazon funding development and taking the power first. A coal site gets a second life as a nuclear one. What decides if it happens, the permits or the price?

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@thetechcapital_ That trade is quietly becoming the default offer. Take the connection now, accept the curtailment, or wait years for firm. Most will take it.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@NERC_Official @ieee_pes The training gap is the quiet part. Operators trained on predictable loads. A 100 MW load that swings in seconds is a different job.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@datacenter Big shift hiding in plain wording. The campus stops fixing power privately, and its generation becomes a resource the whole grid plans around.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

A bill in Congress would make data centers of 20 MW and up cover the full added cost of the power they use, generation and grid upgrades included, instead of spreading it across everyone's bills. Fair rule, or a new barrier to building?

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@NatBullard @apsFYI Every utility's forecast says the same thing lately. The harder question is how much of that promised load signs, builds, and actually draws power.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@CanaryMediaInc An incentive helps the business case, but storage still waits in the same interconnection line as everything else. The queue sets the timeline.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@UtilityDive The gear is selling faster than the grid connections it needs. Manufacturers post their best quarters ever while the interconnection queue just gets longer.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@Ben_Inskeep 700 MW planned, maybe 2,000 MW at full build, against 400 MW of solar plus storage queued behind it. The gap is the story here.

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@CanaryMediaInc Hundreds trained in Chicago. Solar's other queue is people. Panels ship in months; a trained installer takes years. Which queue clears slower now?

[gridandcompute @GridandComputes]

@IEA Negative prices at noon are the grid saying power arrived at the wrong hour. Storage does not add energy. It fixes the hour.
