There’s a story told about the old Bullock Hotel in Deadwood.

Late at night, a dark figure is said to move through the halls. Not walking exactly. More like gliding.

Some guests have claimed to feel a tap on the shoulder, only to turn around and find nobody there. Others say they’ve caught a shadowy figure in the corner of their vision.

And then there are the stories of cameras acting strangely when something unseen seems to be nearby.

The Bullock itself dates back to 1896, built by Deadwood legend Seth Bullock. Today, the hotel openly embraces its haunted reputation, and reports of apparitions, unexplained footsteps, touches and shadowy figures have been part of its folklore for years.

But the identity of the so-called Shadow Woman?

That part remains firmly in legend.

Still... imagine walking those old corridors after midnight.

You feel someone brush past your shoulder.
You turn.
The hallway is empty.

Josiah and Sarah Moore took their four children to the Presbyterian Children’s Day service. Katherine asked two friends — Lena and Ina Stillinger — to sleep over.
Sometime after they came home, someone used Josiah’s own axe.
By morning all eight were still in their beds. The curtains were drawn. The axe was still inside the house.
A visiting preacher, Reverend George Kelly, was tried twice. A jury let him walk.

Late one night in the 1950s, a couple sits parked at a secluded lover’s lane.

The car radio is humming softly when an emergency broadcast cuts through the static: a deranged killer with a bloody hook for a hand has just escaped the local asylum.

Terrified, the girl pleads to go home. The guy rolls his eyes, slams the car into drive, and tears down the dirt road.

They pull into her driveway, step out, and freeze. Hanging right from the passenger door handle is a sharp, chrome hook, ripped clean off its socket.

Most people write off The Hookman as a classic urban legend. But folklorists know legends rarely get born out of thin air.

This story exploded across post-war America right on the heels of the 1946 Texarkana Moonlight Murders, where a hooded Phantom Killer actually stalked young couples parked in remote lovers' lanes.

As car culture blew up and teenagers gained unprecedented freedom, the legend became the ultimate modern caution tale.

It gave physical form to the real anxieties of the era: isolated roads, dark nights, and real monsters lurking just past the reach of your headlights.

The Perron Family Music Box 🎶 🤡

In 1971, the Perron family moved into a farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, where they later reported frightening paranormal experiences.

Among the objects associated with their story was an antique music box, which paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren reportedly took into their collection after investigating the home.

The box became linked to the haunting claims surrounding the Perron family, although its specific history and alleged supernatural activity are not independently verified.

The music box was reportedly displayed among the Warrens' collection of allegedly haunted artefacts.

In 2026, the collection was moved to the Haunted Warren Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, where the museum's exhibits include objects connected to the Warrens' investigations. However, the music box's individual display and precise current location have not been reliably confirmed.

The music box is reported as a real object. The haunting claims remain unproven.

In July 1906, a young woman named Grace Brown boarded a train to Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks. She was pregnant, scared, and desperate to marry the man she loved, Chester Gillette.

Chester brought her out to the middle of the lake in a rented rowboat. The water was glass-still. But he didn’t intend to build a life with her.

He struck Grace over the head with a tennis racket, watched her tumble into the freezing water, and rowed back to shore alone.

Her body was discovered the next morning. The sensational murder gripped the entire country and later inspired the classic novel An American Tragedy.

Chester went to the electric chair, but locals say Grace never truly left the lake.

For over a century, guests at Covewood Lodge and late-night boaters have reported seeing a pale, glowing figure drifting just above the dark surface where the boat overturned.

When the wind dies down and the water turns dead quiet, people still hear faint, disembodied crying echoing off the shore.

The Mary Ann Ward Poppet 🪆

In 1960, a strange little doll was discovered hidden inside the brickwork of a house at 21 East Street in Hereford, England.

Tucked into the folds of its dress was a handwritten curse addressed to Mary Ann Ward.

It wished that she would never rest, eat or sleep, that her flesh would waste away, and that she would never spend another penny.

The doll is believed to date from the late 19th century and is a genuine example of a British magical poppet, an object traditionally made to represent a person in folk magic.

The identity of the person who made the curse, and what happened to Mary Ann Ward, remain unknown.

The poppet is now held by Herefordshire Museum and has been displayed at the Black and White House Museum.

No supernatural effects have been proven. But unlike many “cursed doll” stories, this one comes with the actual object and the original curse.
