Definitely true, mass migrations are almost always difficult to digest, but there seems to be a difference between people who cross an ocean with the intention of assimilating, and people whose home country is a short walk across an unguarded border. You can even look at Italians: they were different than most 19th century US immigrants in that they maintained strong old country ties, visiting and frequently returning after making some money working in the US.
