back in junior college (2017), i had friends whose families had shifted to Vasai-Virar a couple years ago cz they could own a spacious house there instead of renting tiny apartments in Mumbai. but after 2018 Vasai-Virar floods, many left those owned homes & moved back to overpriced rented apartments in Andheri (which sounds like a terrible financial decision…except it wasn’t)
back in 2005 when Mumbai was flooded, Vasai-Virar didn’t flood this badly cz its open-wetlands & salt-pans worked like a giant sponge. then came 2011 real estate boom where population and concrete exploded, but VVCMC still didn’t even plan a storm-water drainage (SWD) system
this in a geography like Vasai-Virar-Nalasopara which is shaped like a bowl b/w Tungareshwar Hills on east and creeks & Arabian Sea in west leads to severe flooding. water flows down from hills, hits railway tracks which sit in middle of natural drainage and is further trapped by choked Achole Nullah…just floods homes. in 2018, Navy literally had to deploy inflatable boats at Nallasopara station to rescue commuters
the worst part? Vasai-Virar loses electricity, mobile networks, drinking water - all basic municipal facilities for hours during these floods (as in 2026), yet VVCMC still hasn’t even implemented any of NEERI-IITB recommendations learning from 2018
so yes, Andheri subways flood & become a yearly monsoon meme. but VVCMC is another level joke. ik it’s not easy for all, but if you work in Mumbai, living in faraway suburbs isn’t worth it imo cz it’s just not longer commutes, it also means dealing w/ worse municipal failures!!
