@Guernsey_NC plays a vital role in protecting, restoring and championing our island’s natural environment. From safeguarding biodiversity to inspiring local action, their work shows why caring for our natural world is so important.
🦋 WELL DONE TO THE BUTTERFLY COUNTERS! 🦋
The Guernsey map is looking very spotty - 184 spots to be precise - that's a lot of butterflies counted in the #bigbutterflycount2025
Don't worry if you haven't counted yet, you've got until Sunday 10th August.

What a great Nature Club at Vale Primary School! 🕷🦗🐜🐝🦋🐞🪳
Sweep nets, magnifying pots & identification guides helped the children to carefully catch, observe & name the 'minibeasts' they'd found.
It was great to find so many different things to look at! 😀

It is fantastic to support pre-school groups enjoying Go Wild at KGV activities organised by @healthimprovegg. Children enjoy searching for plants & insects along the nature trail, listening to nature stories, using magnifiers & much, much more. There's a healthy fruit snack too
It's great to connect with young people in our island schools to share information about our natural environment & the importance of nature.
Thank you to Les Beaucamps High School & St Sampson's High School for the invitation to talk about State of Nature 2024.

Over the next week they will be carrying out Big Seaweed Searches. Great Eggcase Hunts and using iRecord to record butterflies and other species that they find whilst exploring Guernsey. 🦋🦈🪸We hope they have a great time collecting data and enjoying our beautiful island. 🇬🇬
This morning it was great to meet a group of Ranger Scouts from Dreux in France who are in Guernsey for a week. We were really pleased they got in touch as they are keen to do environmental activities during their stay.
It was great to be invited to lead nature walks for Year 3 children from St Martin's Primary School as part of their stay at Fauxquets Valley campsite. The nature walks were a little soggy at times so we saw a lot of amazing snails!🐌
#NatureEducation
Connecting our island community with nature is one of the aims of the Nature Commission so it was a real pleasure to be invited to lead Year 4 children from Amherst Primary School on nature walks around The Millennium Walk at St Saviour's Reservoir. 🕷🐞🦆🐦🐝🦋

Wading birds in Guernsey are also declining.📉☹️
There's been a 90% decline in Turnstone/Dunlin numbers and 99% decline in Purple Sandpiper numbers.
Many waders are site-faithful and struggle to adapt to increased disturbance. 🐶🚶♂️🏊♀️🏄♀️
#wadingbirds#seashore#disturbance
The BTO Wader Count is one of Guernsey’s longest running surveys, taking place since the 1970s and covering many of our beaches. Monthly counts are taken to record waders.
Data shows that 8 of our wading species have declined long-term (25 years) and 11, medium-term (10 years).
Our islets such as Lihou are excellent nesting grounds for our seabirds. It is vital that disturbance, including by humans and dogs, is kept to a minimum to help boost breeding success.
Better protection of vital nesting habitats and feeding areas may help boost numbers.
Guernsey and Herm are valuable for breeding seabirds, supporting nationally/internationally important populations. 🌊🌊
Periodic seabird surveying has shown that overall seabirds are declining, in particular Shags and Herring Gulls.

Our waters also support at least 15% of the global population of critically endangered Balearic Shearwater, as they come to our waters to moult. This species is predicted to go extinct in around 60 years.
