Four months before Lexington and Concord, several hundred New Englanders stormed a British fort and carried off the King’s gunpowder. ❄️

On December 13, 1774, Paul Revere rode north to Portsmouth, New Hampshire carrying word that the Crown had banned the export of arms and powder to the colonies and that British troops were expected to come secure the province’s munitions. Fort William and Mary sat on the island of New Castle at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. It was the only permanently manned military post in New Hampshire and the colony’s main powder magazine, and it was defended by a captain and five men.

On December 14 a crowd of several hundred led by John Langdon overwhelmed the garrison, hauled down the King’s colors, and took roughly a hundred barrels of gunpowder. The next day John Sullivan came back with more men and carried off cannon and small arms. Some of those guns turned up later at Bunker Hill. Nobody was killed, which is very likely the only reason this is not the date every schoolchild learns instead of April 19.

The site is Fort Constitution today, on the Coast Guard station grounds in New Castle, and the walls you can walk up to there are largely from a later rebuilding. No photograph or contemporary image of the December 1774 raid exists, since it happened decades before photography, so the scene here is a best guess reconstruction built from the real geography of the harbor and period accurate detail rather than a copy of any surviving picture.
