ARCHDIOCESE OF OWERRI SECURES NUC LICENSE FOR MARIA ASSUMPTA UNIVERSITY, ADVANCING ITS EDUCATIONAL MISSION

The Catholic Archdiocese of #Owerri recorded a historic milestone on July 24, 2026, as the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially issued the operational license for Maria Assumpta #University, Owerri. The approval marks the successful completion of a rigorous, multi year process and authorizes the university to commence full academic activities.

The journey toward establishing Maria Assumpta University began in 2023 when, on July 26, the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji, accompanied by members of the university’s technical committee, submitted the formal Letter of Intent to the NUC Secretary in Abuja. Since then, the Archdiocese has invested immense effort, resources, and sacrifice to meet all regulatory requirements. This included several verification visits by NUC officials to assess the proposed campuses, facilities, and administrative structures, ensuring compliance with national standards.

The issuance of the license confirms that the university’s physical structures, academic frameworks, and administrative organs are ready for take off. It also signals the Archdiocese’s readiness to launch academic programmes and welcome its first cohort of students.

Maria Assumpta University stands as another visionary initiative of Archbishop Ugorji, who seeks to offer the Church, the nation, and humanity an institution where young people can receive high quality tertiary education without losing their religious, moral, and cultural identity. The university aims to form a generation of Nigerian #youths capable of competing favourably with their peers in leading institutions across the world.

This achievement is a testament to the Archdiocese’s commitment to educational excellence and its dedication to shaping the future of young people through faith rooted, globally competitive learning.

My Visit to Ogoja

After visiting the Catholic Maternity Hospital in Ogoja, where I supported the hospital and its School of Midwifery, I stopped at the INEC Continuous Voter Registration Centre at St. Ben’s Demonstration Primary School, Ogoja. I observed the voter registration exercise and the orderly conduct of the citizens who came out to register.

Thereafter, I honoured the invitation of the Missionary Diocese of Ogoja, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), where the newly installed Bishop held his first Synod and unveiled a vision centred on expanding access to education and healthcare through the establishment of a school and a hospital.

In support of this noble mission, I made an initial contribution of ₦5 million. Investing in education, healthcare, and the welfare of the less privileged remains one of the most meaningful ways to build a productive, compassionate, and prosperous society.

I sincerely thank the Bishop and the Diocese for their commitment to serving humanity.

We thereafter proceeded through Okuku, Yala LGA where we greeted the people.

Together, through purposeful investments in people and institutions, we can build a better Nigeria.
