Our society doesn’t reflect our judicial system anymore.
---------
We need both conservatism and liberalism, and we work through those differences through debate and a healthy democracy. It is not good to suffocate one cause or another because of perceived risks, concerns, or violations. We have the judiciary, the government, and other layers of checks and balances for that reason.
The challenge is that when policies exist in the realms of domestic and foreign policy, they create disputes that people living day to day may not fully understand. Sometimes we need regulation, and sometimes we do not. Sometimes we need to push back, and sometimes we don’t. Everything has limits, context, and justification.
Problems arise when people cross into areas outside their proper frame of reference and distort logic and debate. When someone operating in business crosses into foreign policy, their logic and context may be shaped by commerce (their logic and context is bound and biased to commerce). Someone focused on family thinks about foreign policy through the lens of immediate household concerns, their perspective is naturally bound to the kitchen table. Its not to stay in your lane but we need to understand that certain roles have certain operational principles, we should not use certain historical rhetoric as motivation and we should not make certain roles cross over to being canceled, and isolated. For the time being it is chaos, our logic boundaries are everywhere. Our society doesn’t reflect our judicial system anymore, we are tunnel'd visioned to see these extremes.
Some issues are matters for superpowers, not middle powers. When problems accumulate and become serious enough, that is where superpowers tend to act. If we extend altruistic or humanitarian policies indefinitely, there may be no end to war. Those issues can drive political action through voters, but that does not necessarily make the response meaningful in the long term. People may take advantage of these issues to sacrifice long-term stability in order to satisfy short-term goals, depending on their motives and agency.
Our issues and our methods can sometimes become absolute down the line. Peace at any cost, commerce at any cost, social policy at any cost, environmentalism at any cost, or power at any cost. The extremes are destroying us.
it is like the debate of killing hitler as a baby thing haha... the main thing is that you are lucky to have this debate. i think it will be a deciding factor of whether you guys are a super power in a national security stand point... i am not sure if it will allowed to be an economic debate separated from security though
@chamath i think a lot of it is creating a skeleton beyond the vibe coded prototype... instead of allowing the code to conform to the structure, sometimes the code is a tentacle
i dont think it is phobia... it is being able to hold the batton of maintaining moral clarity of democracy, in choosing our values and attitudes. we are not ready... the usa and the west has been terrorized since 9/11, and if you havent seen their debt, its like a quintrillion dollars. we dont have alliances and the resources in place to make sure we dont loose/fear who we are as a people, trying not to suffer a slow burn or a fast death
@chamath yeah... good ui is supposed to be invisible but at the same time the application of it is being erroded because the benefit and application is gated around enterprises and the white collar
