You can reasonably observe that Chomsky employed bad optics but that has never been his concern.

This is consistent with Chomsky’s long record of defending civil liberties even for those he detests (including the Holocaust denier Faurisson) and his almost obsessive adherence to fair play - he wouldn’t even cross the road on a red light because it set a bad example.

Epstein was also, by all accounts, charming, manipulative — and useful in helping Chomsky navigate complex financial arrangements following his wife’s death.

Chomsky is, if anything, unusually forgiving — even naive — with individuals, including wealthy and unsavoury ones. When he encountered Epstein, Epstein had ostensibly served his sentence, remained socially respectable, and the scale of his crimes was not yet publicly exposed.

The Chomsky–Epstein frenzy misses something basic that Glenn Greenwald and online critics refuse to grasp: Chomsky does not morally engage with people as individuals in the way they imagine. He condemns SYSTEMS, not personalities.
