As the world intensifies efforts to secure sustainable water futures, Namibia is increasingly positioning itself as a centre for global water governance and cooperation. With Windhoek now firmly established as a hub for water diplomacy, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today received a courtesy call from Mr Alex Simalabwi, Chief Executive Officer of the Global Water Partnership Organisation (GWPO) and Executive Secretary of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), together with Hon. Pablo Bereciartua, Minister of Infrastructure of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Chair of GWP, accompanied by members of the organisation’s Board.

The Global Water Partnership Organisation is a multi stakeholder global network dedicated to strengthening water governance and promoting climate resilient investments to support a sustainable and equitable future. The visit follows the inauguration of the organisation’s headquarters and legal seat at the UN House in Windhoek on 23 May 2026, a milestone that further elevates Namibia’s role in shaping global water governance.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in Namibia as the host country. She underscored that water remains a national priority and a key driver of sustainable development, while reaffirming Namibia’s commitment to supporting the organisation as it establishes and strengthens its global presence in Windhoek.

Hon. Bereciartua thanked the Government and people of Namibia for their support, describing the relocation of the organisation’s headquarters as a historic step in its 30 year journey. He noted that GWPO has a presence in nearly 180 countries through more than 75 national partnerships and a network of over 3,000 member organisations. He added that the organisation now proudly embraces its identity as both global and Namibian, reflecting its deepening roots in the country.

He also commended President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership in advancing climate resilience and gender responsive investment. Furthermore, he highlighted GWPO’s intention to work closely with Namibia on a range of priority areas, including transboundary water cooperation in the Okavango and Zambezi river basins, resource mobilisation for the Kunene Region, rural water and sanitation services, and innovative large scale projects such as desalination integrated with energy and food production systems.
