The pairing that would have never worked, but they still tried… Mourinho, a guy who only cares about winning, joined Levy's Spurs, who seemed alergic to it.
And every week, we would get a new gem.
The best and funniest moments of José Mourinho's time at Tottenham:
[A thread]
This José Mourinho answer, on being the enemy of the 'system' so often:
"I prefer to be on this side. But it's more difficult… to play against the system is the most difficult thing there is."
• 3 years vs Negreira
• 9 years vs Man City's 115
• 1 year vs Galatasaray
Now that Pep's legacy is practically gone, here is my top 5 of greatest coaches of the 21st century:
1) José Mourinho
2) Carlo Ancelotti
3) Sir Alex Ferguson
4) Jurgen Klopp
5) Luis Enrique
What's yours?🤔
Throwback to Pep gloating on winning 6 Premier League titles, compared to Mourinho's 3.
Now we know Mourinho's 3 titles were clean, while Pep's 6 titles were illegal.
How the tables turn…
The big debate is over.
Mourinho:
• Champions League with Porto
• Created Chelsea
• Treble with Inter
• Revived Real Madrid
• Miracles at United and Roma
Pep:
• Tiki taka, but…
• Negreira
• 115 charges
We were right.
If Manchester City are stripped of their titles, that means only 5 managers have led Manchester United to become English Champions:
• Ernest Mangnall (2x)
• Matt Busby (5x)
• Alex Ferguson (13x)
• José Mourinho (2018)
• Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (2021)
José Mourinho's updated Premier League CV:
• 4 Premier League titles:
- Chelsea 04/05🏅
- Chelsea 05/06🏅
- Chelsea 14/15🏅
- Man United 17/18🏅
Only Sir Alex Ferguson has more.
GOAT.
The last Real Madrid press conference of Mourinho's first stint was a masterpiece, reflecting on his legacy at the club.
A journalist called his 3 seasons at the Bernabeu a 'failure'.
Mourinho's fantastic reply:
"I brought a little paper, because I expected a question that demands a little paper. La Liga of all records: is mine. You want to disrespect it, but you won't be able to do it. Real Madrid were 20 years without winning the Copa del Rey… it's because it's not easy. We won the Copa after 20 years. The Supercopa we won is small, but we reached 3 Champions League semifinals. Personally, these semifinals don't feed my ego, nor do they satisfy me, may that be very clear. But it mustn't be easy. And I'll tell you why it mustn't be easy: because [lists the previous 18 Real Madrid coaches] John Toshack, Di Stefano, Antić, Beenhakker, Benito Floro, Arsenio, Fabio Capello, Heynckes, Hiddink, Del Bosque, Queiroz, Camacho, García Remón, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Lopez Caro, Fabio Capello again, Juande Ramos, Schuster and Pellegrini... 18 coaches in 21 years: 5 Champions League semifinals. And Mourinho, who you say is bad, 3 Champions League semifinals in 3 years. Do you want to keep the little paper?"
Real Madrid went on to dominate football for the following decade, winning 6 Champions League titles in the following 10 years – with the team Mourinho built.
👏
What did we learn today?
1 • The team is still very naive in some aspects of the game, Atleti away was the perfect test and they failed.
2• Any other Mourinho side in history would have gotten something out of today's game. Lots of work to do.
Fantastic image.
After Romero's foul on Bellingham, EVERYONE in the Real Madrid bench jumped. Every sub, every assistant. Except for one person: José Mourinho himself, who remained quietly seated.
…😂
14 years ago today, Cristiano Ronaldo's last minute winner gave Real Madrid a 3-2 win over English champions Man City.
And the coach (!), José Mourinho, celebrated like this…😂
If you think José Mourinho's rants are wild, his first ever rant was completely insane.
In 2000, Mourinho had only 8 career matches as a coach, when his Benfica player, Sabry, called him out in public.
Mourinho's reply was crazy.
"It's not easy for a coach to like a player who has an absurd average of offsides per game, that doesn't know how to position himself, that runs away from the pressure in away matches, that in the last few games was 3 times one on one with the goalkeeper and didn't score a goal, that at half-time, when I'm more aggressive, goes to the secretary to complain and say he's afraid of me. It's not easy for a coach to like a player like this. Then he says I never speak with him and the relationship is not correct. I have a little book about my individual meetings with the players, everything is there. With Sabry, who says I never speak with him, I had 7 individual meetings. Not one, not two, seven. And of the seven meetings, three of them were in the past 4 days. I spoke with him, but he doesn't like the things I tell him. Then he says that playing only 20 minutes in a match is little for him. Well, the only time he played only 20 minutes was against Paços de Ferreira, when he took 8 minutes just to put on his boots. Sabry left me a message via the media, so I feel perfectly confortable leaving him a message via the media as well. So I want to leave a message to Sabry and to the fans: This is Benfica, not Paok Salonica [Sabry's former club]."
José Mourinho was a head coach for a little over a month.
😂
Throwback to 2020, when Mourinho's Spurs beat Arsenal 2-0 to go top of the table, whilst Arsenal went to 14th place.
Arsenal were at an all time low and finished mid table back to back, but Mourinho had this to say about Arteta…
Ahead of the curve.
What did we learn today?
1 • Espí's is real
2 • José will insist on Vini until he's back to his best
3 • This team switches off, it's a pattern
4 • Barça are much more prepared than Real Madrid to win La Liga, but you can never count Real Madrid out https://t.co/rO8OLBdUzv
