🙏A tribute to Bobby Prince (1945 - 2026)
Bobby Prince (full name: Robert Caskin Prince III) was an American video game composer and sound designer, best known for his iconic work with Apogee Software (later 3D Realms) and id Software in the 1990s.
He created music and sound effects for many classic PC games, especially those published by Apogee or developed by id Software:
id Software titles: Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Doom, Doom II.
Apogee/3D Realms titles: Duke Nukem II, Duke Nukem 3D, Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad.
His Doom soundtrack is especially legendary. It blended heavy metal/hard rock influences (inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Alice in Chains) with the technical limits of early PC audio.
Tracks like "E1M1 (At Doom's Gate)" became hugely influential and were even added to the U.S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2026. Play the video to listen to it once more.
He was one of the most important figures in early first-person shooter and shareware gaming audio; his work helped define the sound of the 1990s PC gaming golden age.
Rest in peace 🙏
TBH, Switch 2 is starting to remind me of the GameCube when devs back in the day (Factor 5/Rare/Retro Studios) were pushing 60fps and very detailed graphics with highly optimized compression techniques and new graphical features not soley dependent on raw power.
