I do think that I have a perspective that's rare for Americans in general, but I don't think that makes what we do right all the time. I just like to explain why it happens and what other people around me don't usually think about, so it hopefully bridges understanding orz

Like all I'm speaking on is as a person that went to college for anthropology who happens to be American. I KNOW how global cultures work. I'm not an idiot who's never heard of anything outside of North America, nor do I even think the US is great whatsoever

@HakataQueen And like I said, obviously some is from bad geography lessons here and never being able to leave US soil. It's unfortunate. And some, like myself, have little to no loyalty outside my region
But I think we should all have fun teaching where we're actually from! .w.

@HakataQueen I don't expect people to know outside of New York and California, and love to teach people the other places in the country, especially with pride to my own state. But I do think of it as state first, country... way second

@maotouyiing @kaoados That's super cool! It's amazing how even small areas can become their own different cultures, even down to neighborhoods in some dense cities
I wish I could give more resources to endangered language projects. When I was young, I even wanted to learn Lakota or Ojibwe here

I'm not saying that to feel bad for the people who do such things. But I think many of them are ignorant on what they're missing

@luliilopezzzz @kaoados That's interesting! Do you guys usually default to cities, regions, or states, then? If someone was to ask 'where in Brazil?'
For example, I usually say state and explain 'it's middle and most north' as addendum. Weirdly a lot of people in Japan knew Wisconsin next door lmao

Just explaining why this happens, how many states are the sizes of countries and have a lot of variance between them, like most other large unions, and the US isn't the only one to doso

I'm very aware that most non-Americans know California = west coast, New York = east coast, but that's pretty much it, which is totallyfine

I don't like the former, believe me. But that's why I've been so into world cultures my entire life, and enjoy cross-share a ton

@hinamorisenju @kaoados That's unfortunate. I don't like America's de facto cultural dominance, but even in the US it can feel alien that everything is California, New York, Texas, or Florida. Which is why it's so cool to learn about the places that get left out! .w.
