Russia Refuses to Provide Defence Systems and Weapons to Taliban Despite Mullah Yaqoob’s Demands
MOSCOW —
Taliban Defence Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid has called for a “professional defence system” for Afghanistan during an international security conference in Moscow, seeking stronger military cooperation and defence support.
However, despite repeated Taliban requests, Russia has reportedly declined to provide any sort of advanced weapons or major military equipment to the Taliban administration due to ongoing regional and international security concerns.
Mullah Yaqoob claimed that Afghanistan under Taliban rule had achieved stability and successfully eliminated ISIS-K, insisting that Afghan territory would never be used against any other country.
Russia, meanwhile, continues to express serious concerns regarding extremist groups operating inside Afghanistan, including ISIS-K and several Central Asian militant organisations.
Russian officials have repeatedly warned that Afghanistan remains a source of terrorism threats and transnational crime despite Taliban assurances.
Although Moscow and the Taliban recently signed a military-technical cooperation agreement, details remain undisclosed, while reports suggest Russia is avoiding direct military arming of the Taliban government at this stage.
Military consultations between both sides are continuing in Moscow amid growing regional security concerns.
