Today we recognize #Juneteenth.
On June 19, 1865 Major General Gordon Granger, along with 2,000 Union troops, announce 250,000 slaves in Texas are free.
This was more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln. Slavery in America had come to an end after 200+ years.

Today we mark an important day, Juneteenth. Not just because it is a federal holiday, but because it’s part of our history. Today marks the day when news of emancipation reached the last enslaved people in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day to think about the importance of freedom and the work that still needs to be done in the name of freedom, the work that so many are working to ensure. As Opal Lee, the grandmother of this very holiday reminds us, we must learn from our history so that it never happens again. We must continue to learn the lessons of the past, so that we can be kinder, better, and more informed. We must continue to learn from what was, in order to make the future better. If we do not learn from the past, then we cannot keep moving forward! #juneteenth
