Abdullah b. Mubarak (d.181) narrates the following in his Musnad:
●Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah entered upon 'Uthmān ibn 'Affān while he was besieged.
He said, "Choose one of three options:
•Either let us carve out a door for you other than the door the rioters are camped at, so that you can exit, and then you can ride to Mecca, for they will not attack you there.
•Or mount your riding animal and go to Shām, for the people of Shām are there, and among them is Mu'āwiyah.
•Or come out with your supporters and fight, for you have men and strength with you. You are in the right, while they are upon falsehood."
●'Uthmān replied:
•As for your suggestion that I go to Mecca: I will not bring trouble there, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
'A man from Quraysh will go to Mecca (resulting in a war breaking out there), he will have half the punishment of all mankind.' I do not wish to be that man.
•As for your suggestion that I go to Shām because the people of Shām are there, and Muʿāwiyah is among them: I will not leave the abode of my migration and the proximity of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (i.e. Madina).
•And as for your suggestion that I go out with my supporters and fight: I will not be the first to disobey Rasulullah by shedding the blood (of the muslims) without right, even if it be a mere cup full."
End Quote.

The main lesson we are taught from these historical events is that they were meant to happen no matter what. It is the Qadar of Allah at play. It was a test for those who witnessed it and it was a test for the Ummah at large to see whether we were going to stay balanced in how we deal with these events or were we going to hide our many faults we have in our connection with Allah by claiming a supreme type of Ma'rifa in figuring out the hidden conspiracy to derail Islam.. as if mankind can somehow change the teachings of Allah's religion which he has promised to protect till the last hour.
We also see the concern 'Uthman had for the Ummah. He did not want to be a cause of bloodshed. We also see the virtue of Mu'awiya and the people of Shām in that they would have certainly protected the 3rd Khalifa of Islam from the wretched hands of his murderers.
Both Sayyiduna Husayn and Sayyiduna Uthman intended good in the choices they made, but the Qadar of Allah willed for other than what they hoped for. The sword of Qadar is ultimately on all our necks. May Allah allow us to leave this dunya in a state that is pleasing to Him and His Messenger ﷺ.

Interesting parallel between an aggadic work and a hadith, can see the differing focus even with a similar message (Messianic Age vs Day of Judgment/hereafter)
Imam Abdullah ibn Mubārak (d. 181) has a work in hadith that a dear brother gifted me with yesterday, along with many other precious works of hadith and aqeeda. The third last hadith the Imam mentioned in his work reads as follows:
"The merciful ones will be shown mercy by Ar-Rahman. Be merciful to the inhabitants of the earth, and the inhabitants of the heavens will be merciful towards you*."
End Quote.

*This can be understood to mean that the angels and Prophets in the skies will make dua for you to be shown mercy by Allah.
This hadith is also found in later works of the Muhadditheen like Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Abu Dāwūd.
