A few snapshots from our visit to Viña Cousiño Macul the day after the conference. Many thanks to @afgarciam for organizing such a memorable tour and for being a wonderful host.
It is always a privilege to present my work at #TIGN and engage with such a distinguished group of researchers and policymakers! Many thanks to our local hosts @uandes and organizers, especially @christianvolpem and all participants for the excellent papers and discussions.
On May 28-29, we held the 16th Annual Conference of LACEA’s Trade, Integration, and Growth Network (#TIGN) in Santiago, Chile. As one of #TIGN’s directors, it was a pleasure to welcome researchers and policymakers for two days of discussions on trade, integration, and growth.
A few snapshots from Santiago. Beautiful city, beautiful campus, and an excellent venue for discussing trade, integration, and growth. Grateful for the opportunity to visit Santiago and looking forward to future #TIGN editions.
1/ I’m deeply moved by the case of Fatoş Pınar Türker, one defendant in the farcical #İBBdavasi designed to politically destroy @ekrem_imamoglu. I’m equally horrified by the thought of how many other women, unknown to the public, may have endured a similar horrible experience.
In a powerful essay for @Newsweek , Turkey’s main opposition leader Özgür Özel argues that Turkey’s democratic crisis can no longer be dismissed as an internal political matter. The systematic dismantling of democratic institutions has become a broader security challenge, with consequences extending far beyond Turkey’s borders.https://t.co/9ZJ1TyBHkB
A Turkish court just effectively ousted Özgür Özel from power, continuing Erdoğan’s crackdown on the opposition party. Since Erdoğan realized he has no democratic path to power, he has grown increasingly repressive.

The 16th #TIGN Annual Conference starts tomorrow in Santiago, Chile. Researchers and policymakers from around the world will gather at @uandes to present and discuss innovative and policy-relevant studies on #trade, integration, and #growth. Agenda: https://t.co/YOIGOIaR4W #FDI
President Erdoğan’s rule has grown more repressive as he realizes he has no democratic path to power. But we are united in our resolve and determined to make Turkey a democratic republic worthy of its people.

Another excellent Global Economy conference from @CESifoNetwork Many thanks to the organizers! Great research, productive discussions, catching up with old friends, meeting new ones. As a bonus, Munich surprised us with gorgeous summer-like weather.
This is the official end to democracy in Türkiye. The main opposition party, the founding party of the Turkish Republic, is taken over by the regime, and the new puppet “leader” is installed by Erdogan. If European leaders continue their dealings with Erdogan as if it is still business as usual, they will be partners in crime and will bear the burden of shame.
Ozgur Ozel, the leader of the Republican People’s Party, has been deposed. Register to discover why this is a worrying step towards autocracy for Turkey https://t.co/cmtefdBlWK
Another dramatic escalation following the imprisonment of Turkey's top opposition politician Ekrem İmamoğlu. Turkey has nearly completed its transition from illiberal democracy to competitive authoritarianism to consolidated autocracy, or in everyday parlance, a dictatorship.
