@LeroyHite_ The first Halo Wars was definitely better than Halo Wars 2, especially when it came to the atmosphere and cutscenes. The cinematic story had its moments, but the gameplay could have been improved.
I agree AI is probably a huge piece of the puzzle, but that’s also part of my point. We’ve spent 20 plus years refining the same basic paradigm instead of seriously trying to replace it.
VR, haptics, spatial computing, neural interfaces, AI worlds, we’ve had pieces of this for years. Yet the dominant gaming experience is still “sit down, hold controller, press button, character moves.”
I’m not saying we should already have a literal Matrix. I’m saying younger me expected us to be much further along than this. And honestly, I think the industry became too comfortable making incremental improvements because incremental improvements sell.
It’s almost 2027, and honestly… gaming has barely changed in 20 years.
We have better graphics. Faster hardware. Bigger worlds.
But we’re still sitting on a couch, holding a controller, pressing buttons to make a character do things on a screen.
When I was younger, I genuinely thought by now we’d be walking through virtual worlds like The Matrix or stepping into a Star Trek holodeck.
Instead, we got 4K textures and ray tracing.
Is anyone else disappointed by how little gaming has actually evolved?
Nobody is forgetting the pandemic or the restructuring. Those things absolutely affected development. But five years is still five years, and Halo Infinite launched in 2021. At some point, “pandemic and restructuring” stops being an explanation for why there’s nothing substantial to show and starts sounding like an excuse.
If the best thing you can show after all that time is concept art, people are allowed to question it.
It’s hilarious seeing them show off concept art like, “See what you could’ve gotten!”
Halo Infinite launched nearly 5 years ago.
They had FIVE YEARS after Infinite to actually make something.
And somehow… they made NOTHING.
Let that sink in. 😂
@LoseTV “Campaign Evolved” is a remake of a game from 2001. 😂
I’m talking about NEW Halo content after Infinite.
If your defense of 5 years of development is “they remade a 25 year old game a 2nd time,” you’ve actually made my point for me.
And that's a legitimate reason to take AI safety seriously. I don't dismiss those risks. But ‘this technology could potentially be dangerous’ isn't the same as ‘this technology shouldn't exist.’ AI researchers warning about catastrophic risks is exactly why we need safety research, oversight and responsible development.
I can believe AI could be enormously beneficial AND that powerful AI needs guardrails. Those aren't contradictory positions. Humanity has always had to learn how to responsibly handle powerful new technology.
Then argue for stronger privacy laws, transparency, and limits on surveillance. I’m completely in favor of that. But "powerful technology could be abused" has never been a serious argument for stopping technological progress. Cars, phones, the internet, cameras, and computers can all be abused too. The answer is responsible governance not pretending the technology itself is the enemy.
@robustdefiance AI doesn’t decide to build a surveillance state. People do. So hold the people and institutions using it accountable. I’m pro-technology, not pro-authoritarianism. Those are very different things.
@robustdefiance Shill posting? No. I just don’t believe humanity should be terrified of its own technological progress. Sorry, that’s apparently controversial.
