BREAKING: BOOHOO! Chief Justice John Roberts throws a hissy fit because the American people aren't nicer to the Supreme Court and treat the judges like "purely political actors" and with "hostility."
These right-wing justices want us to just shut up and accept our fate...
“We’re not simply part of the political process, and there’s a reason for that, and I’m not sure people grasp that as much as is appropriate," Roberts said at the Third Circuit Bench and Bar Conference.
This idea of a nonpartisan, neutral court handing down rulings with no guiding light beyond that of their own righteous jurisprudence is a long-running myth in American history that must be dispelled. The court has and always will be a political institution.
"At a very basic level people think we're making policy decisions," Roberts whined. "I think they view us as purely political actors, which I don't think is an accurate understanding of what we do."
The irony here is that his request for nicer treatment comes immediately in the wake of the Court moving to gut the Civil Rights Act, giving a massive electoral handout to Republicans at the expense of Black voters.
This is the same Roberts who oversaw the overturning of Roe v. Wade after Trump stacked the court with conservative activist judges during his first term (although Roberts himself did not vote to overturn it).
“There is a point where it changes from criticism of the opinion to criticism of the judge, and it can lead to some very serious problems. As soon as you personalize, it can become problematic," said Roberts.
“There’s a lot of hostility that’s publicized about judicial decisions and which judge wrote those decisions,” he added. “I think we have to be a little more careful and make sure people, to the extent you can, are more careful about that.”
Of course, we as Americans are perfectly within our rights to criticize the members of the court on personal grounds. Clarence Thomas has been exposed for taking bribes in the form of lavish gifts from Republican billionaire Harlan Crow. These people are not paragons of moral virtue.
The suggestion that the court is anything other than a partisan battleground at this point is insulting to our collective intelligence. The power to appoint judges is one of the central reasons why Democrats and Republicans fight so hard to win the presidency. Trump himself has bragged about his appointments in the past. Why would he do that unless he thought that they were an extension of his political agenda?
In Roberts' remarks we find a quintessential neurosis of the American conservative movement. These Republicans want to strip away our rights, inflict economic suffering on the working class, and broadly immiserate the majority of the country — and then they want us to ignore that fact or, better yet, thank them for doing it.
Please ❤️ and share if you support expanding the court!
