Content simply means “content,” the substance or material inside a medium. That content can be anything: articles, music, chairs, sculptures, physical artworks, research, or paintings.

What is the content of a museum? statues or culptures, among many other things.
Does that make the sculptor a content creator?
Technically, yes. A museum content creator, we add "museum" to make it clearer.

However, in modern usage, content creator has narrowed to mean a person who creates digital content, mainly for social media, especially video or visual media. Even though the words virtual or digital do not appear in content creator, the term is socially understood today (especially in Indonesia ....) as referring to online social media content creators. Semantically it is broad, but socially it has narrowed for convenience.

I. A similar situation appears with the term "VTuber"

Literally, VTuber means “virtual YouTuber,” a virtual entity producing media on YouTube.
In practice, the word refers to a type of animated virtual avatar with a cartoon or anime-inspired aesthetic, streamed with a personality and activities similar to a streamer. The exact definition varies, but this is the common understanding.

Do we have to say everytime in every conversation that hololive vtubers and others is an "anime-style VTuber" ? im not sure.

Do we have to make a differences between vtuber in youtube platform vs "vtuber" in twitch platform. im not sure.

II. "VTuber" on vtuber dot Asia operational definition

On https://t.co/f3EZ84Moeo, we define a VTuber as a virtual avatar illustrated in an anime or Japan-inspired art style. This virtual avatar streams or makes videos on Youtube. We also include virtual avatars based on Western cartoon styles, manhwa, or other certain stylized cartoon aesthetics.

Is Obit the dog (obit si anjing) that has millions subs, considered a VTuber?

For me, no, and here is why.

If we classify every virtual avatar as a VTuber, the number in Indonesia alone would easily exceed 5,000. With Snapchat filters and countless other avatar tools, the real figure would be far higher. If someone’s nephew creates a virtual character in Roblox, does that make she or he a VTuber? Curating a pool this large with accuracy and consistency is not realistic. This is why we apply two main filters:

1. Stylized cartoon illustration (anime, Western cartoon, manhwa, or similar styles).
2. Original avatar models, either self-made or commissioned. If we include everyone who uses free or pre-made avatars, we will be overwhelm.
3. We also do not include streamer using VTuber as a one time gimmick for the same reason.

Hybrid VTubers, meaning streamers who alternate between facecam and virtual avatar while using the relevant aesthetic, can be included.

There are other considerations ofc ....

III. Does this make the term VTuber ambiguous?

Yes, absolutely.

Both VTuber and content creator have become broad terms that no longer fully reflect the diversity inside them. Language naturally evolves, and people eventually settle on terms that are easy to understand while still practical for managing a vtuber database. It is messy, but this is the reality of socially evolving terminology.

IV. Recommendation for the awards

My suggestion is simple.

For future award events, use the category name “Virtual Creator.” It is not perfect and will still be debated, but it is clearer and more inclusive than “VTuber,” and it avoids many of the ambiguities discussed earlier.

Is all of this important? I dunno.
Do we really need a definition? Well, if you’re an award organizer, then yes, you probably should have one.
