Nobody is saying every person who covers their nose around a Black person is automatically racist, but repeatedly dismissing the concern with “you must smell” is intellectually lazy. If the only explanation you can offer every single time is that the Black person smells, while refusing to consider that gestures can also carry racial or cultural meaning, then you are not having a genuine conversation, you are simply looking for a way to invalidate the person pointing out the behaviour.
