2/2 Refreshing to see the needle move on this topic: sustainable reintegration doesn't mean returnees won't migrate again; it's about supporting a comprehensive approach, working on social cohesion with communities, and providing more opportunities, incl. access to legal pathways
Better cooperation between EU Member States is critical, to move away from current fragmentation and enhance joint learning on how to do better in this very difficult area
The panelists mapped out the key ingredients that allow policies and programs to be better aligned with the needs of returnees and their communities, the benefits of a comprehensive approach, and to support social cohesion
#Migration2022
In today's #IMRF side event, government officials, civil society & international organizations discussed how to move forward with the #GCM’s goal around sustainable reintegration & development
The event was co-organized by @BMZ_Bund@Enabel_Belgium@BelgiumUN@MigrationPolicy 🧵
7/ In sum, building up strong & equitable partnerships btw countries of origin & destination in the field of reintegration still has a long way to go, but the recognition of the value of these partnerships & the curiosity on how to attain this in practice are very much present
1/ Stimulating discussion on the link between sustainable reintegration and development this morning at the Belgian Mission to the UN, co-hosted by @BMZ_Bund, @Enabel_Belgium and @MPI_Europe.
6/ @monicagoracci_ emphasised much-needed mind shift in the field, i.e. that reintegration is not treated as endpoint but rather as start. @UNmigration also traced evolution from individual-oriented approach to reintegration (packages) to a locally embedded one.
Today's webinar @MPI_Europe clearly showed the need for further info on the temporary protection mechanism, with @estherpozovera rallying to the cause. @EU_Commission has now launched an info site for those fleeing Ukraine 👇: https://t.co/2pT3TZCvoQ

7/ Making sure that MS can call upon the support from EU agencies, such as EUAA and FRONTEX, and on financial support mechanisms, will need to be key provisions in the final texts - and follow up plans - of the TPD.
1/ The 1st lap has been run: COM released proposal to activate the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) & it now hands over the baton to MS, which will cast their vote on Thursday. If adopted, a Council Decision is to be drawn up & sent to the EP for information.
But what next?
6/ MS will need to bring together reception and settlement actors and combine their expertise, resources and infrastructure. Plus, think through how the - already proactive stance of - Ukrainian diaspora can be mobilised, while not overburdening it with untenable demands.
