Parinda (1989) will be screening as part of Vidhu Vinod Chopra film festival.

Here's some of what makes Parinda special:

It's one of VVC's finest films, a touchstone crime drama that blurred the line between mainstream and arthouse through its realism and fatalism.

Parinda is also a bit like Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973) in that it served as a major source point for major later crime movies like Satya.

VVC and DoP Binod Pradhan utilized natural lighting, an approach chosen partly due to a limited budget and partly inspired by The Godfather, lending the film its soft (visual) tone. Mumbai of Parinda looks unfiltered.

Editing is where movies are made or broken, said Joe Dante. One of Parinda's highlights is the late Renu Saluja's sharp and mindful editing, bringing an immersive edge to the gritty action and drama. In one of the film's most effective scenes, shots of heavy machinery in motion are intercut with shots of gentle pigeons, creating an uneasy air and cranking up the restlessness.

There's Nana Patekar's edgy turn as the volatile Anna. If you'll be watching Parinda for the first time, you've no idea of the antagonist coming your way.

Also an early showcase for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work. SLB, credited as an associate director on songs, evidently always had an enviable eye for framing romance and pain.

I could go on with my little rave but the fun lies in watching the film, not reading (too much) about it. Don't miss this one on the big screen. Essential Hindi cinema.
