SC has been the best predictor of the eventual party’s nominee … better than all of the early states- IA, NH and NV. 50-60% of SC’s primary electorate is African American the most loyal constituency group to the party. The African American community as a whole tends to provide 85-93% of its vote to the Democratic candidates .
Presidential Primaries are contests with Democratic electorates.

But there is no need to argue or use up a bunch of energy… the decision has been made - SC will be the first primary in ‘28.

A few things…

1. From 2018–2024, either Trump or McMaster led the GOP ticket in SC. Well known incumbents with powerful political machines. Trump on the ballot has made it particularly difficult for Democrats to break through here.
2. This year, no Trump on the ballot. And the top two races are OPEN seats without a GOP incumbent or fundraising juggernaut.
3. Democratic energy is higher. We saw it in the primaries. And for the first time EVER, Democrats have a candidate running in every race across the state. That organization and energy matters.
4. This is a change election, not a nepotism election.

Annie Andrews is hitting her campaign stride while Darline Graham is still trying to figure out how many people live in South Carolina.

There is a stark difference in candidate quality, preparation and readiness.

I’ve run statewide in SC. I know how hard it is for a Democrat to win here. I also know the unique challenges of running during COVID against a well funded, established incumbent who, in the closing weeks of the campaign, was chairing a nationally televised Supreme Court confirmation.

So I know when the ingredients are different.

And this year they are.

Democrats have more pluses than minuses this cycle. Nobody is saying it will be easy. But assuming 2026 will simply look like 2018, 2020, 2022 or 2024 is likely missing what’s happening on the ground in South Carolina.

I just talked to a large South Carolina Republican contributor. He told me he’s giving a bunch of money to Jermaine Johnson for governor. I asked him why, and he asked me why I would continue to support Republicans in our state government when they’ve shown absolutely zero fiscal restraint and taxes the income of its citizens the highest in the Southeast. Upon reflection, he has a serious point.
