Past doesn't matter now. Gujaratis had a big role in developing Mumbai incl Gujarati speaking Parsees and Muslims.

Maharashtra paid money (50 cr over 10 years starting from 1960) to Gujarat after bifurcation to compensate for loss of Mumbai.

Gujarat state lost any claim on Mumbai after that. So while Gujaratis will always be a part of Mumbai it will never be a Gujarati city.
