Tehran witnessed one of the largest public funeral processions in recent history as millions gathered to bid farewell to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The procession stretched across major roads in Tehran and is part of a multi-day funeral that will continue through several cities before Khamenei’s burial in Mashhad.

The funeral has drawn senior Iranian leaders, military commanders and foreign delegations while taking place amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the recent conflicts.

The event has also become a powerful political display, with chants against the US and Israel and renewed calls for retaliation following his assassination earlier this year.

Shia Muslim devotees gathered in large numbers to participate in the traditional religious procession of "Alam-e-Fateh-e-Furat", which commenced from Dariya Wali Masjid in the old city area of Lucknow on the eighth day of Muharram, Wednesday night. The procession was taken out in remembrance of the sacrifice, courage and unwavering loyalty of Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali, the standard-bearer of Imam Hussain's caravan during the Battle of Karbala.

Mourners carrying alams marched through designated routes while reciting elegies and nohas in tribute to the martyrs of Karbala. Thousands of devotees, including men, women and children, joined the procession, which is considered one of the significant Muharram observances in the city. The event was held amid elaborate security arrangements and traditional mourning rituals, reflecting Lucknow's centuries-old Shia heritage and devotion to the memory of Hazrat Abbas, revered as Fateh-e-Furat for his valiant attempt to bring water from the Euphrates River for the thirsty children and family members in the besieged camp of Imam Hussain.
