Day 011 #100DaysOfPerf: I shared the hpbn book (Day 002) that wall about levelling up on HTTP. Well, let's look at CURRENT HTTP data from the @HTTPArchive's Web Almanac. On deck β¨ HTTP β¨ by none other than @programmingart. Let's take a look: π§΅β¬οΈ
πΈ https://t.co/QDBQ6jjNLN
as Robin says: "HTTP remains the cornerstone of the web ecosystem, providing the foundation for exchanging data and enabling various types of internet services." As a chemist might say. HTTP is the *limiting reagent*. Noting much (at all?) happens w/o it.
πΈ For those familiar, the idea that we have H2 and H3 at a combined rate of 4/5 connection bodes well. But the ~20% of H/1.1 is still interesting. But we also find more interesting data when Robin deep dives
πΈ With a growing number of resources being shipped using CDNs, we are also seeing significantly more H2 and higher support and use. This also means the more you use CDNs, the more you take advantage of the modern networking feature and so much more:

Day 005 #100DaysOfPerf: The literacy campaign continues.
Here is β¨ HTTP/2 in Action β¨ by Barry Pollard.
πΈ In plain English, this is THE deep dive into the H/2 protocol which arrived w/ MUCH fanfare after a few decades of HTTP/1.x. This was a huge turning point in performance and a modern protocol
πΈ Related to the Ilya's browser networking book which had an addendum for H/2, Barry delivers a comprehensive description of the H/2 protocol again, providing an understanding of the MODERN approach to asset delivery on the internet, in just over 400 pages.
πΈ If there was ever a pt2 of Ilya's book, this was essentially it: all the network concepts picked up in H/1.1 were improved since 1991, with H/2 being arriving in 2015. Barry set out on the journey of documenting a consequential update to the protocol and penned it into this release. Curious?

Day 004 #100DaysOfPerf: continuing w/ the #webperf books campaign, but also in support of #IWD2025, sharing a book that I read even as O'Reilly shared chapters bit by bit. Lara Hogan's book supported designers (and devs) in how to think about having a performance friendly layout
πΈ I still recall discovering relationships between image colours and resource size, how designers could also PLAN for performance, and beginning to think about web fonts differently... This book was a big one in my maturation around #webperf
πΈ The dev/designer relationship is a gap I'd love to tackle a little more (hello Figma). Though published around ~2014/15, the ideas + concepts remain. You can read the entire book yourselves, likely over a weekend and use it to build on foundations.

Day 003 #100DaysOfPerf: this post is late, suffering from a bottleneck, but it's here. Since I'm on a book run, allow me to post this book which was quietly released about what is quietly THE best performance testing tool on the planet: WebPageTest:
β¨ Using WebPageTest: Web Performance Testing For Novices And Power Users β¨
πΈ WebPageTest has for MANY MANY years been the standard in web performance testing. The granular detail that it brings to anyone wishing to use it can provide the level of data that could only get you investigating issues that likely are at the root of bottlenecks.
πΈ As such, the triumvirate of @rick_viscomi @AndyDavies and Marcel Duran penned this book to help the new and the seasoned in using this very complex testing tool. Though BIG features were added (thank you @scottjehl @tkadlec @stoyanstefanov @jefflembeck), the foundation remains.
π Sharing a link to the hashtag#webperf testing tool book that is again quietly used basically by many of the pros in the enterprise front end space, like engineers at google (which I personally know to be true). Curious? Check out why in the link below. Enjoy!

Day 002 #100DaysOfPerf : Days removed from an interaction w/ @igrigorik , decided to post about his very influential book, published in 2013.
πΈ one thing that is nearly unavoidable to have a good sense of performance, is understanding the network, or at least how it works. Presenting:
β¨ High Performance Browser Networking β¨
π https://t.co/vpRSBFchLB (free to read)
πΈ The opening of the book gets right into it w/ a *Primer on Latency and Bandwidth*. As I'll likely share later in this campaign, and as James Carville might have said had he worked in performance: β οΈ "it's the latency stupid". Latency (bottlenecks) is at the root of web performance.
πΈ 1οΈβ£ Networking 101, 2οΈβ£ Performance of Wireless Networks and 3οΈβ£ HTTP are all sections that have current day relevance and will shed light on some topics you may have heard mentioned in past, especially as we are TODAY in a mobile world.
πΈ One thing is certain, reading the book can only provide you with added literacy that will go even beyond performance. Worth perusing over a weekend.
π Closing this post w/ a short talk on the topic from Ilya himself, during the @OReillyMedia conferencing hey days, here at @FluentConf. Enjoy!

π #100DaysOfPerf Day 86. This decision was mulled a few months back, but the PWA test in @____lighthouse is being deprecated. It was seeing v little use, amongst other reasons. Wild: I believe LH originally started as a PWA testing tool.

π΅π»ββοΈπ #100DaysOfPerf Day 76 (w/e update). I've always believed 2 things: #webperf is an investigative process and every site should be looked at. After that east coast quake, @paulcalvano audited the @USGS reporting site. His findings in a quick thread:

#webperf #100DaysOfPerf
Recently, @whitep4nth3r improved *all* her homepage Core Web Vitals by focusing on improving just one metric: Time to First Byte (TTFB).
All it took was two small changes to how data is fetched to reduce the p75 TTFB from 3.46s to just 704ms.
