Would #8thref have passed without the publication of the laws/limitationd that the government committed to enacting? I think not.
The electorate would not have given politicians a blank cheque.
The eighth amendment was repealed to allow the Oireachtas to legislate on the issue. That is all. There was no other message.
What was far more grim was the opposition voting en bloc to remove limitations that were put in place and highly promoted in order to get #8thref to pass.
During #8thref anyone who brought up the risk of abortion being legalised up to birth was called an alarmist, an extremist or a downright liar.
Yet here we are, barely 7 years later and the vote to introduce it only failed on a knife-edge.
The hard left also lost the second vote to decriminalise abortion up until birth.
How does a married gay man vote for Maria Steen - a woman who campaigned to stop same-sex couples from marrying.
Extraordinary decision.
If Mrs Steen makes the ballot, expect media to endlessly harp on about her being in the minority on marriage and abortion.
And ignore that she is in the majority on immigration, last year's referendums, free speech, how many genders there are, and whether RTE is value for money.
Is this what people voted for in #8thref?

The latest disclosure that 12 babies were born alive after abortion in Ireland in a single year raises extremely serious questions about the standard of medical care they subsequently received or were denied before they died.
The revelations came to light as part of the reply to a parliamentary question submitted by Independent Ireland TD Ken O'Flynn.
This is first and foremost a humanitarian issue. The government has a duty to be more open and transparent with the public on this issue. Decisions about the care given or denied to the babies when they survive the abortion should be made in the open and not behind closed doors.
Back in 2018 soon after the abortion referendum, the then Minister for Health Simon Harris accused TDs in the Dáil of resorting to “shock tactics” for raising concerns about babies being born alive after abortion and the care they might receive.
We now know that the concerns raised are grounded in harsh reality and should not have been dismissed.

I don't think the decision to ban anti-abortion ads changed the outcome of #8thref but it could certainly have been closer if ads had been allowed.

The social media companies involved in #marref were all American, so at least there we agree.
This is typical of how @rte shamefully interferes with the democratic process in Ireland.
We saw the same tactics of sowing the seeds for one side in #marref and in #8thref (and various EU referendums).
