#ajSW Like, putting aside any personal fan expectations or thoughts on the previous movies, it's just... not a good movie by any standard metric, unfortunately. Even if the script were great, the way it's put together is plainly poor. O well :( That's that, then.

#ajSW But yeah, that's purely cosmetic. I dunno, I'm just sad. I really enjoyed The Last Jedi in spite of some of my issues with its character writing, and The Force Awakens was an interesting albeit safe start. This just felt messy, pandering, and poorly made.

#ajSW JJ's got a distinctive directorial style that I don't super love since it's a bit "flat" for lack of a better term, but I think the action's pretty neat, and the film does have a very authentic Star Wars vibe to it, much in the same way The Force Awakens did.

#ajSW There are some fantastic set pieces, and genuinely interesting moments involving Rey and Kylo. I loved the continuation of some of the themes there from TLJ, though not super keen on most of the resolutions.

#ajSW It actively /feels/ like they had no idea what to do. It bounces you from planet to planet like bad MMO fetch quests, not bothering to really invest you in anything that's actually happening until you hit a scene that feels like a main quest.

#ajSW Narratively, it feels like such a compromised vision. I don't know the production timelines, but it feels like course correction based on the controversy of the last movie, and not in a good way. It just destroys all the established themes in favour of derivative nonsense.

#ajSW Anyway, back to thoughts: The script is bizarre. Star Wars has hammy dialogue, that's a series staple, but this is something else. It's just... yeah. The jokes didn't land with my theatre, and in fact, the only thing laughed at was a pivotal scene towards the end...

#ajSW Oh, they're written by the same person? TIL. I mean, I dunno if I can blame that on him since it's an editing and direction thing really, but it's kinda funny that I made that connection completely unaware.

#ajSW The first 40 or so minutes remind me so much of Batman vs Superman's theatrical cut. Things just cut from scene to scene with little regard for your sanity. It's like a Call of Duty montage. The film is so messy in that respect.

#ajSW That was... not good. Summary first: The Force Awakens - Fine filmmaking, derivative and safe script The Last Jedi - Astonishing filmmaking (best looking movie by a mile), divisive and hugely controversial script Rise of Skywalker - Horrible filmmaking, terrible script
