On the strategic importance of the Kurdish return to Afrin: Ilham Ahmed, a senior Syrian Kurdish official, has visited her hometown of Afrin in northwest Syria for the first time since the Turkish takeover of 2018. Her visit coincides with the return of Afrin's Kurds to their homes, and the significance of that homecoming extends beyond the restoration of individual rights. Afrin is arguably the most ethnically coherent Kurdish pocket in Syria, and the most consequential geographically. Its proximity to the Mediterranean sets it apart from the Kurdish areas further inland, and that is precisely why Turkey moved against it first. The 2018 operation was not simply counter-insurgency. It was a calculated intervention to keep any Kurdish presence from consolidating near the Mediterranean coast, closing off a geographic possibility before it could take hold. That possibility has not closed entirely. The return of Kurds to Afrin, and their overwhelming repopulation of it even under Syrian and Turkish military control, constitutes a meaningful demographic anchor in a location of genuine strategic weight. Afrin's demographic balance had been sharply altered after 2018: by the early 2020s Kurds had fallen from a majority to a plurality, with some accounts putting their share as low as 35%. Most estimates now place it back at 70 to 80%, and continued returns may push it higher. Military control and demographic reality are not the same thing, and history offers enough examples of the latter eventually reshaping the former to take the distinction seriously.
