This is important because diamond is a significantly superior compute substrate to silicon. • Thermal conductivity 10-15x improvement • Electrical breakdown field 30x improvement • Band gap 5x improvement • Saturated electron velocity 3x improvement We will live to see synthetic diamond boards and diamond etched chips. It is a paradigm leap, but we are going to run into the end of silicon compute when ASML and ZEISS reach the critical dimension of 6nm in the mid 2030s. Then what? Then we need a new substrate for hardware advances, but we already know what it is, and it works, and we can already make it. It’s diamond. We just don’t have all the downstream manufacturing methods for it yet. It’s incredible to me that our civilisation is going to have diamond computers before we replace the Kroll process for refining titanium, but it seems we are. We have speed run computation and maybe that’s the best strategy, if it accelerates everything thereafter? Increasingly looks like it does.
