#Anandmath पहला अध्याय उस रात पूरा इलाका हरि हरि की पुकार से गूंज उठा संन्यासी दलों में घूम रहे थे कुछ वंदे मातरम् ��ा रहे थे और कुछ जगदीश हरे एक दल शत्रुओं के हथियार छीन लेता था दूसरे उनके कपड़े उतरवा लेते थे कुछ लोग मरे हुए लोगों के चेहरे पर लात मारते थे कुछ और तरह की शरारतें करते थे कुछ गाँव की ओर दौड़े कुछ शहर की ओर वे सड़कों और गलियों में पुरुषों और घरवालों को पकड़ते थे और कहते थे वंदे मातरम् गाओ नहीं तो मार दिए जाओगे कुछ लोगों ने मिठाई की दुकानों को लूट लिया कुछ दूधवालों के घरों में घुसे दही के बर्तन ���ोड़े और दही पी गए कुछ कहते थे ब्रज के गोप कहाँ हैं गोपियाँ कहाँ हैं उस एक ही रात में आसपास के सभी गाँवों और कस्बों में भारी हंगामा मच गया हर तरफ कहा जाने लगा मुसलमान हार गए हैं देश फिर हिंदुओं का हो गया है आओ पूरे मन से हरि हरि पुकारें गाँववाले जहाँ भी मुसलमान मिले उनके पीछे पड़ गए कुछ लोग समूह बनाकर मुसलमानों की बस्तियों में गए उनकी झोपड़ियों में आग लगा दी और उनका सामान लूट लिया बहुत से मुसलमान मारे गए बहुतों की दाढ़ी मुंडवा दी गई उनके शरीर पर गंगा की मिट्टी लगाई गई और उनसे हरि हरि कहलवाया गया पूछने पर वे कहते थे मैं हिंदू हूँ डरे हुए मुसलमान झुंड के झुंड शहर की ओर भा���ने लगे सरकारी अधिकारी इधर उधर दौड़ने लगे और बचे हुए सिपाहियों ने हथियार उठा कर शहर की रक्षा के लिए मोर्चा संभाल लिया शहर की प्राचीर पर सभी निकास द्वारों पर संतरी सावधानी से खड़े कर दिए गए लोग पूरी रात जागते रहे इस चिंता में कि किसी भी क्षण क्या हो जाएगा हिंदू कहते रहे संन्यासी आएँ माँ दुर्गा की कृपा से वही महा�� दिन आए जब हिंदुओं का प्रभात होगा मुसलमान कहते रहे अल्लाह हो अकबर वे यह भी कहते थे इतने लंबे समय तक कुरान पढ़ने के बाद भी हम हिंदुओं को क्यों नहीं हरा सके जो अपने माथे पर चंदन का तिलक लगाते हैं यह दुनिया सचमुच एक भ्रम है इस तरह कोई रो रहा था कोई खुश हो रहा था उत्सुकता और बेचैनी के बीच वह रात बीत गई कल्याणी ने यह सारी बातें सुनीं बच्चे से लेकर बूढ़े तक सभी जानते थे कि क्या हो रहा है”
