#Appassionata (also known as Passionate) is a 1974 Italian erotic drama film directed and co-written by Gianluigi Calderone.
Plot Summary:
The story centers on a seemingly stable middle-class family disrupted by forbidden desires and psychological turmoil. Dr. Emilio Rutelli (Gabriele Ferzetti), a successful married dentist, becomes entangled in a provocative sexual affair with Nicola (Eleonora Giorgi), his teenage daughter Eugenia's (Ornella Muti) best friend. Meanwhile, his wife Elisa (Valentina Cortese), a former concert pianist, struggles with deteriorating mental health. The film explores themes of youthful sensuality, jealousy, incestuous undertones (particularly between father and daughter), family dysfunction, and emotional instability. Two teenage friends test the limits of their allure within the household, leading to chaos.
It has been described as a dark, disturbing psychological drama with elements of eroticism typical of 1970s Italian cinema, blending arthouse seriousness with provocative content.
Key Cast:
Gabriele Ferzetti as Emilio Rutelli (the dentist)
Ornella Muti as Eugenia (the daughter)
Eleonora Giorgi as Nicola (the friend)
Valentina Cortese as Elisa (the wife)
Supporting roles include Ninetto Davoli and others.
Runtime: About 1 hour 36 minutes (96 min)
Genre: Erotic drama / Psychological drama
Language: Italian (with English dubs/subs available in some releases)
Music: By Piero Piccioni
IMDb Rating: Around 5.4/10 (mixed reception; some praise the acting and atmosphere, while others note it leans into exploitation)
The film is considered a cult classic in the Italian erotic genre of the era, featuring notable early performances by young stars like Ornella Muti and Eleonora Giorgi. It has been released on Blu-ray (e.g., Twilight Time) and is available on platforms like YouTube in remastered or dubbed versions.
Note: Due to its explicit themes, nudity, and mature content (including sexual situations and psychological intensity), it's intended for adult audiences.
