**Objective reasonableness** is the primary constitutional standard used to evaluate many police actions under the Fourth Amendment, most notably the use of force. ### Origin and core rule (*Graham v. Connor*, 1989) The Supreme Court held that claims of excessive force during an arrest, investigatory stop, or other “seizure” are analyzed under the Fourth Amendment’s “objective reasonableness” standard, not under a substantive due-process or subjective-intent test. The question is: **Would a reasonable officer, standing in the shoes of the defendant officer and knowing what that officer knew at the time, have found the action reasonable?** ### Key features of the standard - **Objective, not subjective** The officer’s personal intentions, good faith, or malice generally do not matter. It is deliberately designed to avoid second-guessing officers with the benefit of hindsight and to exclude inquiry into their subjective motives. It is the dominant standard for evaluating the constitutionality of police force and seizures.
